Viola Braham

Viola Gertrude Miller Braham, 85, a resident of Parsons, went to be with the Lord late Thursday evening, March 5, 2009, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas.

She was born Sunday, June 24, 1923 at Elk, a daughter of the late David Miller and Iva N. Burns Miller.

Surviving are three sons, Howard M. Maxwell and wife Bonnie of Barberton, Ohio, Harold B. Maxwell and wife Phyllis of Glen Jean, and Fred W. Maxwell and wife Linda of Parsons; two brothers, Robert Miller of Parsons and Charles Miller and wife Pat of Brookville, Md.; and twenty grandchildren, forty-nine great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were seven brothers, Glen, Carl, John, Arnold, Ocie, Earl and George; and three great-grandchildren.

She attended the schools of Tucker County. She worked for the Defense Electronics at Silver Springs, Md., for many years. She loved to quilt, crochet, gospel music and spending time with her grandchildren.

The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Sunday, March 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Monday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Danny Linger officiated and interment followed in the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. Wilma Cassidy

Wilma Jean White Cassidy, 81, a resident of St. George, departed this life early Thursday morning, March 5, at Monongalia General Hospital at Morgantown.

She was born Saturday, April 23, 1927, at Smokeless in Grant Co., a daughter of the late Willard Wesley White and Virginia Melissa Beavers.  On Sept. 25, 1948 at Red House, Md., she was married to Dale F. Cassidy, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Mike, Pat and Dan Cassidy of St. George; two daughters, Connie Myers and Cathy Robinson, all of St. George; two brothers, Bernard White of Ohio and Sam White of Clarksburg; two sisters, Mary Carpenter of Tenn., and Enid Wiles of Morgantown; and seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Preceding her in death were one brother, Dale White; and one sister, Shirley Hawkenberry.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1946. She owned and operated the Auviltown Grocery for several years. She retired from the United States Forest Service, the Watershed Dept. as a secretary. She was a member of the Pifer Mountain United Methodist Church. She was a farmer, an avid hunter and was a homemaker.

On Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m. graveside services were conducted at the Cassidy Family Cemetery at Pifer Mountain. Pastor Jerry Nestor officiated and interment followed. Peggy Houser

Peggy Thelma Houser, 80, of Aurora passed away March 2.

She was born Oct. 5, 1928 in Aurora, a daughter of the late Jesse Cook Adams and Mary Thelma Teets Adams.

Surviving are four daughters; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren ; and one foster grandchild. 

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers; and one sister.

Friends were received on March 5 from 2 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at the Aurora United Methodist church on March 6 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Foy officiating.  Interment followed in Stemple Ridge Cemetery.  Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. 

Rosey E. Miller

Rosey E. Miller, 91, of New Castle, went to be with her Heavenly Father Sunday, March 1, 2009 at Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Center in New Castle, Ind. 

She was born April 4, 1917 in Muncie Ind. to the late Oliver and Esta (Swift) Engelman. 

She was  a Sunday School Teacher at Pifer Methodist church in West Virginia and had attended the South Side Nazasrene Church.  She loved singing at church and playing harmonica.  She was always helping others when they were sick.  She also enjoyed hobbies such as quilting and crocheting.

Survivors include a son Virgil (and wife Iris ) Miller of New Castle, Ind.; a daughter Margaret Faye (and husband Ken) Warnicke of Kalamazoo, Mich.; four grandsons; eight grandchildren; brother Albert (and wife Midge) Engelman of Portage, Mich.; sister Donna Young of Gobles, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Howard F. Miller; eleven brothers and sisters; and a son Marvin Ray Miller. 

The family held a graveside service at Pifer Mountain Cemetery on Friday, March 6 in St. George.  The Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.  

Helen Moore

Helen Louise Johnson Moore, 92, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Thursday morning, March 5, at her home.

She was born Monday, July 17, 1916, at Thomas, a daughter of the late Frank and Rebecca Elizabeth Helmick Johnson.  During May 1940 ,at Bluefield, she was married to Charles Harlow Moore, who preceded her in death June 18, 1975.

Surviving are two sons, Robert "Bob" Harlow Moore and wife Faith of Parsons and Charles "Ted" Theodore Moore of Boyertown, Pa; two daughters, Phyllis Ann Lambert of Elkins and Helen Lorraine Hinkle and husband Larry of Hendricks; and nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by four brothers, Elmer, Albert, Ted and Robert "Bob" Johnson; one sister, Esther Hedrick; three half brothers, John, James and Arthur Cousins; and one half sister, Maude Cousins.

She was a graduate of Thomas High School with the class of 1934. She was a nurse. From 1935 to 1938, she was employed at City Hospital at Elkins. She had worked for Pocahontas Fuel Coal Co., Morgantown Co. Hospital, the former Tucker County Hospital from 1951 to 1974 and Cortland Acres from 1978 until 1987. She was a member of Liberty Rebecca Lodge 95, Parsons. She was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church at Parsons. She was an avid Mountaineer football and basketball fan.

The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Saturday, March 7 from t to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Sunday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m.  Pastor Loren Metzner officiated and interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery at Thomas.
