Wallace C. Bennett
He was born Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1924 at Parsons, a son of the late Robert Dayton and Bertha Jane Flanagan Bennett. On Dec. 30, 1949, at Hambleton, he was married to the former Mary "Joan" Funkhouser, who preceded him in death Feb. 1, 2008. They had celebrated fifty-eight years of marriage.
Surviving are one son John Wallace Bennett and wife Sarah Hamilton Bennett of Parsons; one daughter, Mary Jane Leard and husband Robert of Parsons; two sisters, Marie Ball of Nella's Nursing Home, Elkins and Jean Miller and husband Jason of Parsons; four grandsons, Sgt. James M. Leard and wife Elvira Shreve Leard of Grafton, Jacob Dayton and John "Daniel" Bennett of Parsons and Jordan Michael Leard of Parsons; two great-grandchildren Meredith Elaine and Christian Michael Leard of Grafton; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were one sister Velma Putzulu; and one infant sister Helen.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the Class of 1943, where he was on the basketball team which he led to many victories. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in England. He was employed by the Cumberland and Allegheny Gas Co. as a Serviceman and then as Local Manager of Columbia Gas of WV in Parsons where he retired after 32 years of service. His true love was working on heating and all gas appliances.
During the flood of 1985, he walked with his toolbox from house to house to help in any way that he could to restore heat and hot water. He serviced more than 100 homes during that time. Wally was an avid hunter and fisherman and had a beautiful singing voice. He sang in a church quartet and in the church choir for many years.
He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a Christian by faith and was a member of the Parsons Church of God.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday,March 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Wednesday, March 18 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Robert Leard and The Rev. Eli Hostetler will officiate and interment will follow in the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War will conduct full military rites. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Herbert Simmons
He was born Monday, July 3, 1939 at Red Creek, a son of the late Herbert J. Simmons and Gaynal Thelma Bonner Simmons. On May 29, 1966, at Oakland, Md, he was married to the former Sharon Ellen Teter, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Robert Allen Simmons of Woodbridge, Va; three brothers, George Simmons of Philippi, Olin Simmons of Alexandria, Va., and Frank Simmons of Davis; nine sisters, Thelma, Erma, Jean, Pat, Mary, Shirley, Ruby, Virginia and Cindy; and several nieces and nephews.
He attended the schools at Davis. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He worked for the Wilbar Truck Equipment Co, as a Shop and Service Supervisor for many years and for the R.E. Michael Heating and Air Conditioning Co.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Saturday, March 14 from noon until 2 p.m. A graveside service was conducted in the Collett Cemetery at Hambleton on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Pastor Adam Snyder officiated and interment followed. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, Ma. 01202. Grace Smith
Grace Marie Frymyer Schiffbauer Smith, 64, of Elkins, passed away March 1.
She was born April 6, 1944, a daughter of the late James Willard and Rosetta Belle Beckett Frymyer. She was preceded in death by her first husband Ronald Lee Schiffbauer, and her second husband William Ernie Smith.
Also preceding her in death were one daughter Karen Rose Emmons; three brothers Paul, Otis and Willard Frymyer; and two sisters Freda and Macel Frymyer.
Survivors include one son, David Allen (Charlotte) Schiffbauer of Shreveport, La.; two daughters, Donna Sue (Danny) Gimnick of DeQuincy, La., and Tina Marie (Curtis) Tollar of Uniontown, Pa.; one brother, James L. Frymyer Sr. of Elkins; three sisters, Mary Katheryn Savage of Oakland, Md., Gertrude Phillips and Nellie Louise Waybright of Parsons; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Apolistic Church of Point Marion, Pa. Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home on March 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were held on Wednesday March 4 at Hinkle Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Pat Cassidy officiating. Interment followed in Maplewood Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Leona Warren
Mrs. Warren was born March 13, 1930, at Benbush, a daughter of the late Howard Vernon Kelley and Viola Mae Slaubaugh Kelley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Thurman Kelley.
Mrs. Warren retired from the U.S. Government, Department of Defense. She was employed as a GS7 USAF Civilian Secretary at the Pentagon where she was a dedicated employee who earned 15 accommodations and had a hall in the Pentagon named after her,the "Mel Warren Hall.". She was a member of FOE #936, OES Walter Chapter #43, Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America Inc., the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the Rebekah's, Eastern Star-STem from Mason, DAvis Lodge #103, I.O.O.F, and Mountain Top Red Hat Society Chapter #34235.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 14, from 2 to 6 p.m., the hour of the funeral service. Rev. Pat Cassidy officiated. Interment will follow at a later date in Davis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Hinkle Funeral Home, P.O. Box 186, Davis, W.Va. 26260. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
