Howard Ashby
Howard Wesley Ashby, 92, a well-known educator of Tucker County, a resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of Colonial Place at Elkins, departed this life Tuesday evening, March 21, at the Colonial Place. He had been in declining health.
He was born Sunday, February 8, 1914, at St. George, a son of the late Daniel Boyd Ashby and Emma White Ashby. On May 5, 1934, at St. George, he was married to the former Delcie Agnes Vance, who survives at the Colonial Place. They had celebrated seventy one years of marriage.
Also surviving are one son, Howard Dale Ashby and wife Elnor of Parsons; one daughter, Patty Ann Wotring and husband, Ray, of the Blackman Flats community; one sister, Mary Ballowe of Winchester, Va.; five grandchildren, Kathy, Steve, John, Jeff and Jennifer; nine great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one infant son; one brother Paul Ashby; and one sister Grace Snider.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1931. He received his teaching certificate from Glenville State Teacher’s College. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Davis & Elkins College during 1950. During 1951, he received his Masters in Education from West Virginia University. He taught school for eighteen years in Tucker County, in the one-room schools including Limestone and the Murphy School on Pifer Mountain. He ended his career as a math teacher from Parsons High School. He was an avid gardener, well known for his produce and blue ribbons at the West Virginia State Fair and the Tucker County Fair. He attended the Parsons Church of God.
The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons Friday, March 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor Saturday, March 25, at 11 a.m. Pastor Robert Leard officiated and interment followed at Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements for Howard Wesley Ashby. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.lohrbarbfuneralhome.com.
Elsie Bible
Elsie Leigh Bible, 87, of Davis, passed away Tuesday, March 21 at Garrett County Hospital at Oakland, Md.
She was born Dec. 20, 1918, at Davis, a daughter of the late Fredolph and Thekla Victoria Anderson Bergstrom. Her husband, Alden Joseph Bible preceded her in death in 1992.
She is survived by one sister, Eloise Bachtel of Davis; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Carl, Ellery, Harry and Albert Bergstrom; and four sisters, Ruby, Ellen, Edith and Eleanor.
Mrs. Bible worked for the National Bank of Davis before retiring. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church and the Tuesday Night Club.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home, Davis on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at the Hinkle Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 25 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Allen Schwarz officiating. Interment followed in the Davis Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
