Orlan Phillips Sr.

Orlan Richard “Poncho” Phillips Sr., 73, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Saturday morning, April 8, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital, at Elkins.

He was born Saturday, Dec. 31, 1932, at Porterwood, a son of the late George H. Phillips and Gladys Peg Bright Phillips.  On Dec. 23, 1955, at Baltimore, Md., he was married to the former Roberta Mae Vance, who survives. They had celebrated fifty  years of marriage.

Also surviving are five sons, ORichard “Goose” Phillips of Parsons, Phillip Anthony Phillips and wife Loretta of Davis, Johnathan Jeffery “Beak” Phillips and wife Patricia of Parsons, William Joseph “Batson” Phillips of Hambleton and Thomas Jerry “Klinger” Phillips and wife Valerie of North Carolina; two daughters, Mary Helen Triplett of Parsons and Gladys Marie “Peggy” Garcia-Montalvan and husband Antonio, of South Carolina; four brothers, Denver “Bud” Phillips and wife Pauline of Holly Meadows, Dale “Buckskin” Phillips of Montrose, Bobby Phillips and wife Anita of Blackman Heights and Harold Phillips and wife Judy of Holly Meadows; two sisters, Virginia Yokum of Morgantown and Irene Knotts of Blackman Heights; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death besides his parents are one brother Arnold Roy “Sockum” Phillips Sr.; two sisters Mary Ann Phillips and Doris Jean Phillips; and one great-granddaughter Brook Jennings.

He attended the schools of Tucker County. He was a truck driver for Harry Summerfield and had worked for the Dryer Box Factory and Bethlehem Steel of Baltimore.  He worked for the former Nelson Tree Service of Tucker County and the former Parsons Tannery. He was a construction worker for Local 984 of Clarksburg. He worked for the City of Thomas and worked security for Blackwater State Park, from which he retired. He was well known as an antique trader and collector. He was a member of the Mountain Top Hunting Club. He was an avid outdoorsman.

The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Wednesday, April 12, at 1 p.m. Pastor Pat Cassidy will officiate and interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. Joseph Turner, Jr. 

Joseph Alfred Turner, Jr., a resident of Eldersburg, Md. died Thursday, April 6, at the University of Md. Medical Hospital Center from an extended illness.

He was born Nov. 16, 1943 in Hendricks.  He was the son of the late Joseph A. Turner Sr. (June) and Rose Young Turner..  He married the former jean Cook (daughter of the late Edward H. (Perry) and Marjorie Simpson Cook) on July 11, 1970. 

He graduated from Parsons High School in 1961.  Joe was a retired federal Employee with the National Security Agency at Ft. Meade, Md., and enjoyed his grandchildren, NASCAR, RVing and fishing.  He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War.  

In addition to his wife he is survived by sons John E. turner and wife Jennifer of Marriottsville, Md. and Jeffrey J. Turner and wife Angela of Spring Hill, Fla.; a siblings William Turner and wife Ann of Baton Rouge, La., Robert Fulton of Stuarts Draft, VA., Elwanda (Cookie) and Harley Smith of Hudson, Mich. and Jerry Turner and wife Julie of Columbus, Ind.  He is also survived by granddaughter, Kaitlyn and Karissa Turner and grandson Vincent Turner of spring Hill, Fl.  He was preceded in death by granddaughter Amber Turner.  He will have another granddaughter scheduled to be born in May. 

Visitation was he3ld at Zumbrun Funeral Home in Eldersburg, Md. on Sunday and Monday, April 9 and 10.  Services were at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 11 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Roland M. "Bud" Brown officiating.  Interment was at Lake View Memorial Park in Eldersburg.
