Doris Arnold
Doris Irene Arnold, 93, (also affectionately known as "Muddy") of Davis, passed away April 16 at Cortland Acres Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 13, 1915 in Dobbin, a daughter of the late Leon M. Ruckle and Amanda B. Kline Ruckle.
She was preceded in death by her husband Claude (George) W. Arnold in 1999.
Also preceding her in death were one son Donn Arnold; two brothers James Ruckel and Leon (Punk) Ruckle; and two sisters Dana Donica and Neti Ruckel.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include one son George (and Linda) Arnold of Central Point, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews
Doris was employed as a sales clerk at Blackwater Falls State Park for many years.
She enjoyed being around people and was an avid fan of anti-litter campaigns. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Davis. In lieu of flowers pick up some litter.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home on Saturday, April 18 from noon until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Allen Schwarz officiated. Interment followed in the Davis Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Calvin Bright ![]()
Calvin Coolidge Bright, 77, a resident of Hendricks, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, April 15 at the Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins.
He was born Saturday, Feb. 27, 1932 at Dry Fork, Elk, a son of the late Martin Vanburen Bonner and Rosa Bell Bright.
Surviving are three sons Clifton Riley Summerfield and wife Rebecca of Mich., Charles Lough and wife Cathy of Baltimore, Md. And Patrick Leslie Bright and wife Joni of Va.; one daughter Rose Marie Haga of Baltimore, Md.; one brother Van Davis and wife Phyllis of Elk, Dry Fork; four sisters Halena Deitz of Meadow Bridge, Londa Bowman of Cresaptown, Md., Eva Moore of Cumberland, Md. and Ellen Zukas and husband Bob of Baltimore, Md.; companion and caregiver Teresa Mallow; ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are four brothers Howard Davis, Herbert Davis, Nathan Bright and Ben Bright; two sisters Virginia ‘Betty’ Shipp and Genevieve Pencoski; and several half-brothers and sisters.
He attended the schools of Tucker County. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Confl ict. He was a former employee of Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point, Md.
He loved the outdoors, doing his yard work and visiting with his many friends at the restaurant.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home on Saturday, April 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Matthew Bright officiated and interment followed at the High Ridge Cemetery at Elk, Dry Fork, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion, the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War and the Tucker County Veterans Association conducted full military rites. Craig Luzier
Craig Luzier, 58, of Davis, passed away Monday, April 13 at Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born June 18, 1950 in Parsons, a son of Ella Jean and the late David Luzier of Davis.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, the former Betty Bonnett; two sons Travis (and Heather) of Bruceton Mills and Jared (and Beth) of Martinsburg; one daughter Alicia (and David) Lambert of Parsons; three grandchildren Tucker and Taylor Luzier and Zander Lambert.
He was preceded in death by two brothers Rhett and Eric Luzier.
He was a 1969 graduate of Mountaineer High School, and a 1970 graduate of Wheeling Barber College.
He retired from Consolidated Coal with 30 years of service.
Craig was a man who loved spending time with his family. Until his illness, he loved coaching baseball and basketball for Tucker County youth. He was a member of Davis United Methodist Church.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 15 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at Hinkle Funeral Home on Thursday, April 16 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bill Hunt officiating. Interment followed at Davis Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Paul Roy ![]()
Paul Lewis ‘Essie’ Roy, 80, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Thursday afternoon, April 16 at Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown following a short illness. He had been in declining health.
He was born Monday, June 25, 1928, at home on Tannery Row at Parsons, a son of the late Denver Lee Roy and Viola Pearl Bodkin. He was united in marriage March 28, 1952 to the former Velma Virginia Shahan at Red House, Md., with The Rev. Donald Gallion officiating. They had celebrated fifty-seven years of marriage.
Also surviving are one son Gregory Paul Roy of Parsons; two daughters Risha Roy McGill and husband Randy of Point Pleasant and Michelle Roy Phillips and husband Allan of Ranson; one brother Junior Denver Roy and wife Patricia of Morgantown; one sister Joan Roy Liller of Camas, Wash.; one half-brother Stelman Roy; three grandchildren Reanna and Jon Phillips, both of Ranson and Arysta McGill Brick and husband Jason of Mount Airy, N.C.; one stepgrandson Jeremy McGill and wife Elaine of Sissonville; three step-great-grandchildren Kyia, Emma and Eric McGill, all of Sissonville.
Preceding him in death are five brothers Howard ‘Hank’, Eddie, Wallace, Raymond and Donald Clare Roy; two half-brothers Charles and Winfred Roy; and two sisters Gladys Roy Kisner and Patty Roy Smith.
He attended Parsons High School and received his GED in 1953. He was known for his exceptional athletic abilities and had a special love of the game of basketball and Horseshoes. In 1947, he enlisted in the newly formed United States Air Force. He actively served during the Korean Conflict and received an honorable discharge in 1953. He reenlisted in the Air Force in 1956 and wore the uniform with pride as a Staff Sergeant, honorably discharged and retired in April of 1971. He did tours of duty during the Vietnam Conflict as well as other fields, foreign and domestic, receiving numerous medals, badges and citations. Immediately prior his retirement he had the privilege of participating in the work of the Apollo 14 space mission. Even with all the variety, challenges and excitement of his earlier years, he couldn’t wait to return to Tucker Co. He called it "God’s Country", and he and his wife Velma returned to the Parsons area after retirement. He worked at the Parsons Tannery Company until it’s closing. He also worked at the Power Plant at Mt. Storm and did work for the West Virginia Soil Conservation Dept. He was a Protestant by faith and at one time served as Sunday School Superintendent at the Parsons First Church of the Nazarene. ‘Essie’ loved to sing, was helpful, neighborly and known for his quick wit. He was a most devoted fan of the WVU Mountaineers.

Eli Hostetler officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion, the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War and the Tucker County Veterans Association conducted full military rites. Oscar Sherman ![]()
Oscar Lesley ‘Scrub’ Sherman, 90, a resident of the Moore Community, Montrose, departed this life Monday evening, April 13 at Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas.
He was born Monday, Aug. 26, 1918 at Moore, a son of the late Grover A.
Sherman Sr. and Lilly Rosier Sherman. In Oct. of 1939, he was married to the former Lavelle Virginia Phillips, who preceded him in death, Jan. 21, 2008. They had celebrated sixty-eight years of marriage.
Surviving are two sons Philip Sherman Sr. and wife Carolyn of Horseshoe Run and David Sherman and wife Lorraine of Ohio; one daughter Rebecca Sherman Bozic and husband Dennis of Va.; six grandchildren Mark, Stephen Jr., John and Scott Sherman, Dylan Bozic and Brian Pavelko and wife Kelly; and one great-grandson Nick Sherman. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by one son Stephen Sherman Sr; one grandson Philip Sherman Jr.; seven brothers Ward, Leonard, Ray, Paul, Racie, Grover and Clyde Sherman.
He attended the school at Moore. He worked in the Shipyards at Baltimore, Md., during World War II. He worked for the former Lambert Chevrolet Co. at Parsons and for many years was the owner and operator of Sherman’s Auto Repair at Moore.

The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home on Friday, April 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Saturday, April 18 at 11 a.m. The Reverend Neil Parsons officiated and interment followed at the Moore Cemetery at Porterwood. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Hospice Care, P.O. Box 193, Parsons, WV. 26287.
