Cheryl Carr

Cheryl R. Carr, 46, of West Chestnut St., Mount Vernon departed this earth on Monday, April 23, surrounded by family and friends at her home after a long battle with cancer.

She was born on Oct. 21, 1960 in Zanesville, a daughter of Thomas and Patricia (Vincent) Purdum of Mount Vernon.

 She was an active member of the Knox Chapter #236, Ohio Eastern Star and also a past member of the Mount Vernon Women of the Moose.  She was a member of the Harvest Christian Church in Mount Vernon.  She was currently disabled from the Mount Vernon Developmental Center, where she had worked for the past 10 years, and before that spent most of her life as a caregiver.  She was always there when friends and family were in need.  She loved planning all types of functions and helping people coordinate special events in their lives.  She handmade many cheese balls and buckeyes for her family events and other friends often had her make them for their events.

She had a fondness for fun in the water, indoors and out.  She also enjoyed relaxing with her family and friends at a remote cabin on the Dry Fork River, in the hills of West Virginia.  

In addition to her parents, Cheryl is survived by husband Andrew Carr, whom she married on May 14, 2005; a daughter Kathryn "Katie" Carr of Mount Vernon; step daguthers Mary Boubary of Ashley and Bobbi Stover of Norristown, Penn.; brother Robert and Pearl Purdum of Mount Liberty; a sister Christina and Dave Ihinger of Danville; her father and mother-in-law Harold and Mary Carr of Fairlawn; sisters-in-law Jeanette Carr of Cleveland Heights, and Ruthann Carr of Crown Point, Ind.; nieces Tina Ihinger, Heidi Purdum, and Sarah Robinson; nephews Adam Hayman, Alex Bias, Austin Bias, David Robinson, and Ruby Ben Robinson; a life long friend Saunja Smith and her children Rebecca Littleton, Joseph Oliver, and Amber Smith; and Paul Boubary Jr.'s mother Evelyn Boubary and family. 

Cheryl was preceded in death by her second husband and Kathryn's father Paul Boubary Jr. in March 2004.

The family had a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Sunday April 29, at the Moose Lodge in Mount Vernon with Pastor Dan Lund officiating.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kathryn Carr Education Fund, /c/o First Knox National Bank 1 South Main ST., Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050.

Gail Hiser Snyder

Gail Hiser Snyder,  91, of Petersburg, died April 27 at the Grant County Nursing Home.

She was born June 19, 1915, in Petersburg, WV, the daughter of the late William F. Hiser and Ida Rebecca Hiser.

Surviving are her one sister Carmen Huffman Lafevre of Grant County Nursing Home; three daughters: Becky Peters of Petersburg, Margaret Bensenhaver of Virginia Beach, Va, and Shirley Williams of Albuquerque, N.M., one son: Robert M. Snyder, Jr. of Timberline, Davis,  seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Snyder (May 9, 1998); two sisters, Dora Brake and Nola Pratt, and three brothers, Carl, Curtis, and Elton Hiser.

Gail graduated from Petersburg High School in 1932, married her high school sweetheart, and followed him through a twenty-year diplomatic career in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kenya, Ivory Coast, Malawi, Jordan and Nigeria.  From 1932-33 she  attended St. John’s Jr. College and received a Teaching Certificate from Shepherd's College. Her teaching career included founding a grade school in Karachi, Pakistan.  She was active in many organization: South Branch Senior Citizens (Director of the Golden Age Band), Business and Professional Women’s Club, Homemaker’s Club and various organizations overseas.  In 1987 she represented Grant County as a Belle at the State Folk Festival.  She became a member of Eastern Star in 1940.  She first began attending her church, now Grove Street United Methodist, as a bay and has been active there since her return to Petersburg.  

Visitation for friends and family was at Schaeffer Funeral Home Monday, April 30, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.  Funeral services were Tuesday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at Grove Street United Methodist Church with Rev. William Brown and Rev. Richard Longbon officiating.  Interment followed at Lahmansville Cemetery, Lahmansville.  Arrangements were by Schaeffer Funeral Home.  Memorials may be made to Women to the World (www.womentotheworld.org) or Charity of Choice.
