Okey R. Poling

Okey Ray Poling, age 75, a resident of the Blackman Flats community, Parsons, departed this life Wednesday morning, April 26, in Monongalia General Hospital at Morgantown. He had been in declining health.

He was born Wednesday, May 21, 1930, at Bull Run, St. George, a son of the late Stingley E. Poling and Tacy Wilt Poling.  On March 2, 1957, at Red House, Md., he was married to the former Ruth Irene Lambert, who survives. They have celebrated forty-nine years of marriage.

Also surviving are three sons, Gary Ray Poling and Ricky Lynn Poling, both of Parsons and Donald Allen Poling and wife Amanda, of Augusta; two daughters, Pamela Ann Johnson and husband Robert of Charleston and Wilma Lee Poling of Parsons; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ruth Phillips; two brothers, Kenneth and James Poling; and four sisters, Lena Wiens, Evelyn Shahan, Virginia Denney and Edna Williams.

He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1947. He was a disabled veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the U.S. Army. He worked for the former Dorman Mills of Parsons, the late Willard Stevens Construction and he helped build the stacks at Stony River. He was a Nazarene Minister, having served the Nazarene Church at Weaver, the Church of the Holy Light of Parsons and various churches of the area. He also was the former operator of the Fisherman’s Store on Main Street of Parsons for eleven years.

The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Saturday, April 29, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Pat Cassidy and Pastor Brent Reed officiated and interment followed at Parsons City Cemetery, where the H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War conducted full military rites.

Gordon Slaubaugh

Gordon E. “Johnny” Slaubaugh, 83, of Cleveland, Ohio and formerly of Horse Shoe Run, passed away April 25.  He was born Oct. 24, 1922, at Horse Shoe Run, a son of the late Julius and Iva Sell Slaubaugh.

He was the beloved husband of 59 years of Mary Frances “Sue” Beckman Slaubaugh; father of Terry (Mike) Smith and Susan Danene (Helmut) Weiher; loving grandfather of Amy Ballinger and Bryan Klingenbery; great-grandfather of two; and brother of Arthur Slaubaugh.

He worked as a proprietor of a service station and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home, Davis on Friday, April 28  from 5 to 9 p.m.  Funeral services were held at Hinkle Funeral Chapel on Saturday, April 29 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Doug Horner officiating. Interment followed in Eglon Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.  

Hilda J. Strawderman

Hilda June Kalar Simmons Felton Strawderman, 74, a resident of the Holly Meadows Community, Parsons, departed this life Tuesday morning, April 25, at her home. She had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer. 

She was born Sunday, Sept. 6, 1931, at Parsons, a daughter of the late Lloyd Kalar and Lula Schoonover Kalar Loughry.  She was married first to Charles Simmons, who preceded her in death in October 1952, secondly to Robert Felton, who preceded her in death in August 1979 and on May 22, 1982, at Parsons, she was married to Earl “Jim” Strawderman, who survives.

Also surviving are four sons Terry A. Simmons and wife Kathy of Blackman Heights, Tom Felton and wife Michele of Holly Meadows, John Felton and wife Jackie of Driftwood, Texas, and Mark Felton and wife Kerry of St. Albans; two daughters Andrea Felton of Morgantown and Sue Ellen Strawderman and husband Riley of Bunker Hill; two stepsons, Jeff Felton of Mt. Baldy, Calif., and James Strawderman and wife Tammy of Wake Forrest, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Kathy DiBacco and husband Butch of Parsons; one sister, Mary “Tootie” Hovatter of Parsons; one brother, Robert Kalar and wife Lolita of Parsons; nine grandchildren Kari Ann Poling, Michael and Susan Simmons, Patrick and Erin Felton, Trey, Cody, Brett and Wesley Strawderman; one great granddaughter Emily Simmons; two step-grandchildren, B.J. and Ryan DiBacco; and one stepgreat-granddaughter Kaylee DiBacco.

Preceding her in death were one stepdaughter Julia Felton; one brother John Kalar; and six sisters Jennie Ambrose, Helen Robinson, Lucille Hinchman, Rachel Hovatter, Frances Parsons and Gladys Barb.

She attended the schools of Tucker County. She was a member of the Saint Johns United Methodist Church at Parsons. She was a member of the Holly Meadows Homemakers and a member of the BUNCO Club of Parsons. She was an avid bowler, having been a member of the Powder Puff Leagues of Parsons and Elkins. She worked on the Election Board for many years. She was a noted baker and she loved to cross-stitch.

The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Thursday, April 27 from 5 to 9 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Friday, April 28 at 11 a.m. The Reverend John Morrison officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. The families suggest that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Saint Johns United Methodist Church, 107 River Avenue, Parsons, W.Va. 26287. Robert E. Wotring

Robert Eugene Wotring, 63, of Aurora, died April 25, at his residence.

He was born June 12, 1942 in Aurora, a son of the late Calvin Sheridan and Hester lee Sell Wotring. 

Survivors include his wife; a daughter; two step-sons; a step-daughter; five brothers,; two sisters; and five grandchildren 

He was preceded in death by a son. 

Friends were received at Maple Grove Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Robert J. Klier officiating. Interment followed in Aurora Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
