Martha Whetzel

Martha Ann Mason Whetzel, 66, a resident of the Blackman Flats Community, Parsons, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, May 27, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Saturday, Aug. 8, 1942 at Fork Mt. Community, Parsons, a daughter of the late Russell Allen Mason and Armittee Amanda Collett Mason Sponaugle and step-father

Bryan Sponaugle. Her stepmother ‘Mom’ Avalene ‘Em’ Mason, survives at Akron, Ohio. On April 9, 1960 at Red House, Md., she was married to Sheldon Richard Whetzel, who survives.

Surviving are one son Richard Edward Whetzel of Bretz; three daughters Amanda Lea Williams and husband Bill of Martinsburg, Shelia Ann DeVilder and husband Mike of Blackman Flats and Barbara Ellen Auvil and husband Ed of Holly Meadows; four brothers Burl Mason and wife Sandy of Hambleton, Allen ‘Hambone’ Mason of Brooklyn Heights, Greg Mason of Akron, Ohio and Bryan ‘Butch’ Sponaugle and wife Dottie of Pifer Mt.; two sisters Patsy Stone of Akron, Ohio and Naomi Lambert and husband Harry of Mabie; seven grandchildren April and husband Mike, B.J. and wife Amanda, Marcy, Daniel and wife Aubri, Jacob, Jeffrey and Katie and husband Cody; six great-grandchildren, Amanda Brooke, Rusty, Ryan, Taylor, Erika, MaKenna and Bryson; Sponaugle brothers and sister; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are two brothers Clarence ‘Johnny’ Mason and Cleon Sponaugle; two sisters Wilda Sponaugle and Lucy Tingler; and one brother-in-law Herman Stone.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1960. She was a former employee of Jim Propst Store. She was a homemaker and most happy when she was surrounded by her family and friends. She was an avid gardener and loved the outdoors. She was a Christian.

The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday, May 29 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Saturday, May 30 at noon. The Reverend John Morrison officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. The Lohr & Barb Funeral
