Betty Corbin
Betty Teresa Lawrence Corbin, 96, a former resident of Tucker
County and a resident of Windsor Woods Nursing Home of Hudson, Fla., departed
this life Saturday evening, June 24, at the nursing home.
She was born May 22, 1910, at Hendricks, a daughter of the late Harry Lawrence
and Mary Maud Hancock Lawrence. During the year 1930, she was married to
Glavis Corbin, who preceded her in death.
Surviving are one son, Glay Leon Corbin and wife Helen Kay of New Port Richey, Fla.; two grandsons, Jeff and Mike Corbin; and two great-grandchildren, Savanna and Tyler Corbin.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and Herman Phillips; and one sister, Lona Waggy.
She attended the schools of Tucker County and was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College at Elkins. She was a waitress most of her life, working at the Chancellor Hotel in Parkersburg. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at Parkersburg.
A graveside service will be conducted Thursday morning, June 29, at 11 a.m. at Fansler Cemetery at Hendricks. Father Timothy Grassi will be the presider and interment will follow. Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Betty Teresa Lawrence Corbin.
Denver Davis
Denver Lee Davis Sr. departed this life Sunday, June 11, 2006 at his home in El Paso, Texas. He had been in declining health and death was attributed to cancer.
He was born Dec. 26, 1938 at Elk (Dry Fork), the second son of the late John W. and Elthel Vanscoy Davis.
Surviving hare his wife of 41 years Alicia Mendez Davis; two sons Denver Lee jr. and wife Frances and James William; three grandchildren Erik, Alexis and Phoenix all of El Paso; one brother John J. Davis and wife Peggy; five sisters Rosalea and Clayton Knotts, Kay and Homer Carr, Faye and Billy Carr, Leah Booth and Sharon Hinkle all of Tucker county; 26 nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews and many loved ones and friends.
He was preceded in death by one brother Robert (Bob) Davis.
Funeral services were held at the Hill Crest Funeral Home chapel, El Paso, Texas on June 15, 9:45 a.m. He was laid to rest at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
Joseph A. Harper
Joseph Allen Harper, 60, of Canaan Valley, passed away at his residence Monday, June 19, 2006.
He was born on Feb. 23, 1946 in Parsons.
Survivors include his mother Martha Alice Harper Swann of Kingwood; one brother, Kenneth Baldwin of Ravenna, Ohio; four aunts, Mary Dysle of Canton, Ohio, Alta Jenkins of Akron, Ohio, Adella Harper of Gadsen, Ala. and Frances Harper of Naples, Fla.; and cousins Donna and Wilford Duley of Independence, Richard and Mary Lantz of Oakland, Md., Ronald and Janet Lantz of Ridgley, Kitta and Joey Michaels of Gadsen, Ala., Harold and LaVerna Harper of Gadsen, Ala., Patti and Thomas Holmes of Naples, Fla. and David and Diane Harper of Willoughby, Oh.
Mr. Harper was a laborer. He was baptized at the Davis Church of God. He enjoyed helping his friends and neighbors and visiting O.C. Cluss Lumber Company, the Canaan Garage, Canaan Valley Stores and the Grant County Bank, Canaan branch.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home on June 23, from 1 to 3 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. James Martin officiated. Interment followed in Vandevender Cemetery, Harman. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. From 22 Jun 2006.
Lona Sell
Lona M. Sell, 88, of Lewisburg, Ohio, formerly of Toledo, Ohio. passed away June 23 at Good Samaritan Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Jake Sell; one son-in-law Charles Fredrick; and two brothers Delbert and Clinton Gauer.
She is survived by four daughters Mary (Woody) Pumphrey of The Villages, Fl., Margaret (Bill) Littleton of Summerville, S.C., Carolyn Fredrick of Lewisburg, Ohio and Marie (Jim) Sawyers of Huber Heights, Ohio; three sisters Hilda (Don) Goss of Parsons, Ruth Bright of Trotwood, Ohio and Leora (Conley) Lee of Englewood, Ohio; two brothers Ron (Janet) Gauer of Eaton, Ohio and Don (Diana) Gauer of W. Milton, Ohio; seven grandchildren Chirs Littleton of Summerville, S.C., Dixie (Patrick) Murphy of Zanesville, Ohio, Cathy (John) Chihocky of John's Island, S.C., Patrick (Ruthie) Fredrick of Flat Rock, Mi., Chris Sawyers of Huber heights, Ohio, Deeanna (Jeff) Barhart of Lewisburg, Ohio and Roy (Michelle) Fredrick of Laura, Ohio; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
Lona retired from Inland Corporation after over 27 years of service and she was a longtime member of Northminster Presbyterian church.
The family received friends on Monday, June 26. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on June 27 at Rogers Funeral Home, New Lebanon, Ohio. Interment was at Royal Oak Memorial Gardens.
Ruth Shaffer
Mattie Ruth Forman Shaffer, 93, of High Street, Philippi, departed this life on Monday evening, June 20, at Mansfield Place, surrounded by friends and loved ones and following a four-month illness.
She was born Aug. 16, 1912, in Cove District, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Joseph Naylor and Viola M. Clarkson Forman. On April 10, 1952, she was married to Harold Wilbert Shaffer, who preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 2005.
Survivors include a niece, Debra Winograd of Lexington, Ky.; a nephew, Mark Forman of N. Fort Myers, Fla.; a grandniece, Lee Ann Crane, believed to be in Colorado; cousins, Roy Clarkson of Bell Fourche, S.D., Josephine Forman of San Antonio, Texas, Marie Forman Wilson of Waldorf, Md., John Ralph Forman of Bedford, Va.; a close friend, Josephine Simpson of Philippi; and a number of distant cousins and a host of friends.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, William Naylor Forman and George Forman; by a nephew, William Forman; and two nieces, Sandra Crane and Alice Williams.
Mrs. Shaffer was a graduate of Philippi High School and attended Alderson-Broaddus College. She retired in 1974 from the First National Bank of Parsons, where she had served as a cashier and loan officer. She had also worked as a tax deputy during her father's tenure as Barbour County Sheriff and as a secretary in the Myers Hospital in Philippi.
She was a member of Crim Memorial United Methodist Church and was an active member of Barbour County Senior Center at Philippi. She particularly enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends through regular telephone calls and senior center shopping trips.
Friends were received at the funeral home from 3 to 9 p.m. on June 21 and from 2 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 22. Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, from Stemple & Forman Funeral Home, 385 S. Main St., Philippi. The Rev. Alicia Rapking officiated. Graveside services were conducted at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Parsons City Cemetery. Stemple & Forman Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
