Faye Mick
Faye Loretta Hall Mick, 85, a resident of Parsons, and a former resident of the Tucker Manor, departed this life Thursday evening, July 9, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas.
She was born Thursday, May 22, 1924 at Confluence, Pa., a daughter of the late William Edward Hall and Charlotta Layfield. On April 30, 1941 at Oakland, Md., she was married to Gordon Lawrence Mick, who preceded her in death June 6 of 1974.
Surviving are four sons Charles Lawrence Mick and wife Dorothy of Lisbon, Ohio, Dale Edward Mick of Woodbridge, Va., John David Mick of McClellandtown, Pa. and Earl Richard Mick of Pueblo, Colo.; four daughters Hazel Maxine Price of Bretz, Loretta Mae Poling of Parsons, Phyllis Darlene Barnhart of Hastings, Minn. and June Ann Evans and husband Ben of Hopwood, Pa.; one sister Evelyn Thompson of Chalk Hill, Pa.; sixteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are one daughter Shirley Fazenbaker; three brothers James W. Hall, Edward F. Hall and Robert B. Hall; four sisters Betty Jeffries, Nellie Lohr, Peggy Matthews and Grace Ream; one grandson Michael A. Poling; and son-in-laws Larry Woodrow Price and John Daniel Poling.
She attended the schools of Confluence, Pa. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church at Parsons. She was a member of the Tucker County Senior Center where she was a member of the Goldenaires. She was a loving mother and grandmother, who was a wonder cook and baker and she will be surely missed by her family and friends.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Saturday, July 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Sunday, July 12 at 1 p.m. The Reverend Jeff Anderson officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. Virda Rizer
Virda Evelyn James Rizer, 94, a resident of Hambleton, departed this life Tuesday evening July 7, 2009 at Valentine’s Personal Care Home at Elkins.
She was born Wednesday, April 14, 1915 at Thomas, a daughter of the late Ola Closton James and Goldie Ellen Raines James. On Sept. 7, 1933 at Hambleton, she was married to John Elwood Rizer, who preceded her in death Feb. 15, 1979.
Surviving are one son John Elwood Rizer Jr. of Bedford, Ohio; three daughters Barbara Jean Jones of Belington, Wanda Ellen Mitchell of Hambleton and Virda Marie Rizer of Parsons; one sister Keitha Ankrom of Hambleton; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; she raised a grandson Robert Tucker Nestor and a granddaughter Barbara Ellen Simmons.
Preceding her in death are one daughter Lila Dean Rizer; four brothers Doyle James, Marvin James, Kermit James and ’Bill’ Ola James; and one sister Zelda Bender.
She attended the schools of Tucker Co. She was a homemaker. She was a former employee of North Central Community Action Association working as the Head Cook for Head Start for ten years. She was known for her bread baking and cooking and she loved to shop. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church at Rosendorf for many years.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Thursday, July 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Friday, July 10, at 1 p.m. Pastor Loren Metzner offi ciated and interment followed at the Sunrise Cemetery at Hambleton. Bill Rosenau
Charles William "Bill" Rosenau, age 72 years, Mayor of Parsons, went home to be with the Lord, Monday afternoon , July 13, 2009 at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
He was born Sunday, May 30, 1937 at Parsons, WV, a son of the late Henry Clarence Rosenau and Inez Grace Parsons Rosenau. On December 1, 1956 at Oakland, Md., he was married to the former Sylvia Lea Knotts, who survives. They celebrated 52 years of marriage.
Also surviving are one son, Michael William "Mike" Rosenau and wife Christine of Parsons; two daughters, Barbara Jo Fisher and husband Joe of Morgantown, Kimberly Dawn Ledden and husband John of Mackeyville; one sister, Helen Jean Newbrough of Parsons; 12 grandchildren, Adam "Scott", Jason, Seth, Matthew, Lacy, Ryan, Logan, Tyler, Parker, Megan, Samantha and Camille and six great-grandchildren, Braxton, Ethan, Blake, Austin, Avery and Anisley; sister in law, Alma Rosenau, and Uncle Grant and Aunt Maxine Parsons King of Pa. And several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death two brothers, Robert and Ronald "Barney" Rosenau and four sisters, Elloween Flynn, Catherine Rosenau, Louise Simmons and Norma Lee Walker.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the Class of 1956. He was President of his class and lettered in all sports of his four years of high school and was quarterback of the football team.
He was an inspector for the WV Dept. of Highways, a former employee of R.H. Armstrong and Kingsford Charcoal Co., the former Parsons Tannery and the former Dorman Mills, where he served as union president.
He was a vocational teacher for Parsons High School and Tucker County High School for 32 years, having been voted by the students as favorite faculty member.
He was a four-term Mayor from July 1972 thru June 1980. He was instrumental in the building of City Hall, the Library, Mill Race Park, and the River City Ball Field of which he was very proud.
He was a member of the Parsons City Council and the West Virginia Education Association. He was Emergency Service Director and he was on several boards and authorities. He was a member of Parsons High School Alumni Association, and was inducted into the Parsons High School Hall of Fame. He coached Track, Football, Little League and Baseball. He was athletic director of Tucker County High School for several years. He was vice president of the Tucker County Development Authority.
He was a member of the Riverview Chapel Church where he served as trustee. At the time of his death he was mayor of Parsons serving from July 2004 to present. He was an avid hunter, gardener and a fan of the WVU Mountaineers. He especially loved to watch his grandchildren as they played sports and he was no doubt their number one fan. His family was truly the love of his life.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Friday, July 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dick Gadd and the Rev. Pat Cassidy will officiate and interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the R.H. Armstrong Football Field, Bleacher Fund in memory of Mr. Rosenau, Tucker County Athletic Boosters c/o Kevin White, RR 1, Box 30A, Clay St., Hambleton, WV 26269. Imogene Shaffer
Imogene Katheryn "Kate" Shaffer, 70 of Aurora died July 6.
She was born Oct. 3, 1937 in Webster Springs.
Survivors include a son; two brothers; three sisters; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Friends were received at the Aurora Memorial Building on Friday, July 10 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 11 at Brookside Church of the Brethren from 2 to 4 p.m., the funeral hour. Rev. Bradley Shaffer and Pastor Scott Rush offi ciated. Interment followed in the Aurora Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Kathy Shaffer
Kathy Ann Shaffer, 50, of Aurora died July 6.
She was born Aug. 22, 1958 in Kingwood, a daughter of the late Walter Dale Shaffer and Imogene Katheryn (Arbogast) Shaffer.
Survivors include a son; one brother; and two grandchildren.
Friends were received Friday, July 10 at the Aurora Memorial Building from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 11 at the Brookside Church of the Brethren from 2 to 4 p.m., the funeral hour. Rev. Bradley Shaffer and Pastor Scott Rush offi ciated. Interment followed in the Aurora Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Winnie Shomo
Winnie Arlene Shomo, 80 of Farmington, passed away on Saturday afternoon, July 11, at her home.
She was born on March 24, 1929 at Limestone Mountain in Tucker County the last survivor of nine children born to the late Elijah Hugh and Dessie Ann Plum Snider.
Winnie was preceded in death by her husband Jack L. Shomo in 1979.
Following the death of her husband, she graduated from the Morgantown Beauty College and operated Winnie’s Beauty Shop on Locust Avenue in Fairmont for 13 years. Prior to that, she had been employed at Owens Illinois glass plant in Fairmont for more than 10 years.
Winnie was a life long member of the United Methodist Church. She graduated from Parsons High School.
She was an avid hunter, a wonderful cook and loved sewing. Family and friends will remember Winnie for her strength, kindness and the love she had for her family.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law Tim L. and Cindy Shomo of Farmington and Rod L. and Sherri Shomo also of Farmington; fi ve very special grandchildren Steffi Shomo, Alisha Shomo, Jack Shomo, Shannon Batson and her husband Adam and Jessica Shomo; a great-granddaughter Savannah and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her life long friend Toliver Miller; her sisters Mary Ann Shaffer, Priscilla Dumire, Frances Wilson; her brothers Bill Snider, Willard Snider, Colburn Snider, George Snider and Russell Snider.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont, WV 26554 with Rev. Pat Cassidy offi ciating.
Interment services followed at Woodlawn Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the Shomo family at carpford@verizon.net.
James Smith
James Blair Smith, late of Georgetown, Texas succumbed to complications of lung cancer on Aug. 28, 2008 at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas.
He was born Jan. 2, 1935 in Red Creek. He graduated from Parsons High in 1951 and also from WVU in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
His wife Caryl Lydick Smith; their three children Stephanie Smith Stanfield and her husband Jerry of Arroyo City, Texas, James Smith Jr. and his wife Jan of Alexandria, Va. and and Scott Smith and his wife Lisa of Haslet, Texas survive him.
Surviving also are five siblings Warren Smith of Auxvasse, Mo., Frank Smith of McHenry, Ill., Rebecca Smith Brommel of Dallas, Texas, Wayne Smith of Leadmine and John Smith of Parsons; as well as seven grandchildren Emily, James, Anna and Ryan Smith, Michael, Sean and Jeremy Smith; and three great-grandchildren Dean, Bodie and Brylee Stanfield.
His parents Denver and Bessie Lambert Smith; his stepmother Ethel Raines Smith; and his sister Norma Smith Parsons preceded him in death.
There will be a memorial service for family and friends at the Flanagan Hill Church and Cemetery on Saturday, July 18 at 2 p.m. followed by a reception at the Red Creek home of the late Benson Lambert.
