Carson Cross

Carson Dale Cross, 74, a resident of Glen Burnie, Md., died July 17 at Baltimore-Washington Medical Center, Glen Burnie, Md. 

He was born April 9, 1932, in Hendricks. 

Survivors include his wife of 49 years Ida Mae Roy Cross; two daughters Donna Dale and Harry Connor, Roxanna Lyn and Jim Zimmerman; grandchildren Jason Connor, Joshua Connor, Samantha Cummings and Jimmy Zimmerman; great-granddaughter Tiana Connor and the daughter of his heart Julie and Roop Sharma all of Baltimore, Md.; a niece Lois and bill Lambert and a nephew Charles and Angie Lantz all of Parsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer E. Cross and Beulah Marie Kerns Cross and sister Della Jean Cross Lantz.

He attended the schools of Tucker county and graduated from Thomas High School with the class of 1950.  He was a Crane Operator Riggerman for Ellicott Machine in Baltimore before retiring in 1993.  At the time of his passing he was employed at Pinnacle Granite and Marble, Inc.  He was a deacon at the first Baptist church of Landsdowne, Md. and also attended services at Abundant Life church of Glen Burnie.  Dale enjoyed reading, woodworking and attending church. 

A celebration of Carson Dale's Life was held at the First Baptist Church of Landsdowne, Md. on July 22. His ashes will be interred at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thomas at a later date with graveside services.  He wanted his final resting place to be the place always called home, West Virginia.   

Helen Harner

Helen G. McBee Harner, 86, of Charles Town, died Saturday, July 22 at Shenandoah Helath Village Center. 

She was born Sept. 4, 1919 in Morgantown, a daughter of the late Sanford and Grace Squires McBee.  She is survived by one son William R. Harner and his wife Janet of Charles Town; two granddaughter Tamara S. Davidson and Judith A. Carpenter and five great-grandchildren all of Birmingham, Ala.; and nieces and nephews.

She was the last member of her immediate family.  She was preceded in death by her husband Harry C. Harner in 2003; one daughter Elizabeth M. Palm in 2001; one brother Spencer McBee; and two sisters Mary Snyder and Lydia McBee. 

She was a member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church.  She was active in 4-H and was the first from Monongalia County to win the State Style Review at Jackson's Mill.  She was salutatorian of her graduating class at Morgantown High school and a former member of the Daughters of American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star. 

Family and friends were received at hasting Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown on Monday, July 24 from 6 to 9 p.m.  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 25 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Susan McGee officiating.  Burial followed at Mt. Calvery Cemetery.

Bernard Palausky

Bernard S. Paulusky, 77 of south Charleston, died July 13 at Cortland ACres Nursing Home in Thomas after a long illness.  

Survivors include a son Dan and Kitty Palausky of Cross lanes;  daughters Marcia Schrader of Bethel Island, Calif., Beth and rocky Spencer of Parsons; a brother-in-law Jack and Ellis Front of New Port Ritchie Fla.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Sharon Palausky on Oct. 4, 2005.  the fmaily requests contributions to Hospice Care Inc.  P.O. Box 760, Arthurdale, WV  26520.  

Alice Smith

Alice Mae Degler Smith of Parsons and more recently a resident of Colonial Place in Elkins died Sunday, July 23 at 1:30 p.m.

 She was born September 15, 1919 in Davis, a daughter of the late William Webster and Marie Swearingen Degler. 

She made her home in Hambleton, with her grandparents Charles Wesley and Fannie Bell Baker Swearigen and her aunt Elizabeth Ann Swearingen.  She was married to Elliot Kepler Smith who preceded her in death on July 29, 1998.

She attended Hambleton Public School graduated from Parsons High School with the class of 1936, and was inducted into the Parsons High School Alumni Hall of Fame may 25, 1996. 

She received AB and BS degrees from Davis-Elkins College .  She was a member of the Half-Century Club at the college, and earned a MBA degree from Kent State University.  She was the first clerk for the Monongahela Power Company when that office was opened in Parsons in 1941.     

She served 38 months on active duty with the U.S. Women Marines during WWII and was discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant.  She worked as company "C" clerk with the State Police , WV Dept. of Public Safety for eight years.

She was a retired educator from Mahoning County, Ohio, taught part-time at Mount Union College.  A Life Member of the Ohio Education Association and American Vocational Association.  She was a member of the Presbyterian Church since 1932.  She was a 50-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Blackwater Chapter having joined Dec. 1944 and served as Chapter Regent from 1981-1987.
