Donald Carr
Donald Louis Carr, 80, a resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home of Thomas, departed this life Thursday morning, Aug. 3, with his family.
He was born Sunday, June 20, 1926, at Elk in the Dry Fork area of Tucker County. He was the fourth child of the late Clifton Joseph and Mary Ethel (Cooper) Carr.
He was preceded in death by sister Pauline B. Heater of Roanoke and Good Hope; and brothers, Roy A. Carr of Akron, Ohio, and Alfred L. Carr of Hambleton.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Joanne Mullennex of Parsons; and two sons, Daniel L. (and Teri) Carr of Ashland, Ky. and Jeffery J. (and Jennifer) Carr of Charlottesville, Va. He is also survived by four siblings, Harold S. Carr of Akron, Ohio, Velma A. Faller of Ridgely, Orville L. Carr of Thomas and Franklin J. Carr of Akron, Ohio. He was the proud grandfather, called “Pap” of four grandchildren, Dustin L. Carr and Jason W. Carr of Ashland, Ky. and Miss Sidney C. Carr and Susannah C. Carr of Charlottesville, Va. He also had two step-grandchildren, Travis (and Brittany) Barker and Miss Tiffany A. Barker of Ashland, Ky.; and one step great- granddaughter, Brooklyn C. Barker of Ashland, Ky.
After graduating from Parsons High School in 1945, he was drafted into WWII and stationed at Third Army Headquarters in Germany. Upon return, he married Joanne Mullennex at Oakland, Md. on April 26, 1947 at Red House, Md. Not long after, they moved to the Canton-Barberton, Ohio area, they returned to Tucker County in 1956, living at Thomas. He worked for the Tucker County Board of Education, primarily as a school bus driver. In 1960, he and his family moved to Ashland, Ky., where he worked as a tobacco salesman for several years. For the next twenty years, he worked a variety of sales jobs. In the mid 1970's, he, wife Joanne, and son, Jeff returned to Tucker County and lived in Hambleton. He served as Tucker County Housing Coordinator for three years in the 1980's. He often found ways to provide service to the communities he lived in. In Kentucky, he was an auxiliary policeman, baseball coach, Cub Scout leader and was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. In Tucker County, he became an active and committed member of the Hendricks Ruritan Club. He served as Zone Governor and District Governor of the Upper WV Ruritan in 1990. Another accomplishment, of which he was proud, was being a co-founder and then coordinator of the annual Jesse Anderson and Virginia (Carr) Carr family reunion, which commenced in 1969 and continues to the present. Lastly, he lead the effort to rebuild Bright’s Chapel at Elk, his childhood church, which had burned in 1978.
In keeping with his spirit and memory, the family suggests that you provide an act of kindness or service to someone in need. The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday Aug. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. On Saturday morning, Mr. Carr was moved to the Bright’s Chapel Church at Elk, where friends were received from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. The Reverend Leon Hevener and the Reverend John Morrison officiated and interment followed in Parsons City Cemetery in Parsons where H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military rites. Nonito Gestre
Nonito Diolata Gestre, M.D. of Gaithersburg, Md. died on Friday, Aug. 4.
He was the loving husband of Pamela Ann St. Clair; brother of Charles Gestre, Hilda Gestre, Roger Ty, Astria Genorga, Iday Gestre, Delia Gestole and the late Ricardo Ty. HE is also survived by other loving family and friends.
He was the son of the late Felix Ty and Rosario Diolata.
Friends will be received at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave., (Rt. 28, just off I-270, exit 6A) Rockville, Md. 20850. on Friday, Aug 11 from 7-9 p.m. Services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12 at 10 a.m. Interment is private. Donald Hebb Sr. ![]()
Donald Gene Hebb Sr., 71, of Thomas, passed away Aug. 5 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born Sept. 21, 1934, at Sugarlands, a son of the late Russell William and Ora Marie Nazelrod Hebb.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald (and Connie) Hebb of Thomas and Wally (and Donna) Hebb of Fredericksburg, Va.; one daughter, Lisa (and Robert) Myers of La Rue, Ohio; one brother, Prentice Hebb of Elyria, Ohio; one sister, Mary Whetzle of Loraine, Ohio; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Hebb, on June 22, 2002.
Mr. Hebb was a veteran of the US Army. He was employed as an electrician at Alpine Coal Mines for 32 years. He was a Protestant by faith.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis Tuesday, Aug. 8, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour with the Rev. James Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Harold G. McDaniel
Harold Gene McDaniel, 70, a resident of the Rosendorf Community, Hendricks, was pronounced dead on arrival at Tucker Community Care Center at Parsons, Monday evening, Aug. 7, 2006. He had been in his usual health.

Mabel Payne
Mabel Margaret Harris Payne, age 92 years, a resident of Elkins
Street, Parsons, departed this life Monday morning, Aug. 7, at her home,
following a brief illness.
She was born, Saturday, Nov. 8, 1913, at Glady, a daughter of the late Rafual
Harris and Lena Bowers Harris. During 1930, she was married to Harry Huffman
Payne, who preceded her in death during 1976.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas Payne and wife Sally of Kansas City, Mo., and Jack Payne of Parsons; one daughter, Patty Ann Payne of Parsons; one brother, Robert Harris of Marlinton; two sisters, Greta Miller of Parsons and Alice Antolini of Elkins; ten grandchildren; several step grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were four brothers, Ralph, James, Fielding and Jack Harris; two sisters, Geneva Triplett and Jeanette Beck; and two grandchildren.
Mabel attended the schools of Glady, had worked in the Central Supply Department of the Good Samaritan Hospital at Lexington, Ky. and for several years the former Memorial General Hospital at Elkins. She was a member of the Parsons Church of God and was dedicated to her family and her precious Lord.

Helen Waitkus
Helen Mary Waitkus, 95, of Davis, passed away Aug. 6, in Cortland Acres Nursing Home in Thomas.
She was born in Coketon, a daughter of the late Alexander Jasper and Katherine Martha Demblauskus Waitkus.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Alexander Victor Waitkus; and sisters, Stella Kizas, Victoria Ingram, Julia Norkus and Evelyn Cook. She was the youngest and last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include nephews, Alexander Waitkus of Virginia Beach, Va., John Norkus Jr. of Florida, Daniel Ingram of Aurora and Robert Waitkus of Thomas; and several great-nieces and great-nephews, including Alexander Paul Waitkus, Pamela Waitkus and Mark Daniel Waitkus.
Ms. Waitkus’ occupation was housekeeper. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
Aunt Helen Waitkus was a generous, gentle, kind lady who loved her flower gardens. Aunt "Hennen" we will great miss you-- Alex, Paul, Pam and Mark.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Aug. 11 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Thomas with Father Timothy Grassi as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
