Stuart Thayer Sr. ![]()
Stuart Grey Thayer Sr., 87, died early Thursday evening Aug. 9, 2007, at his home.
He was born, raised, lived and died in the mountain hamlet of Thomas. And live he did. He was born Dec. 12, 1919, to Cecil and Edith (Stuart) Thayer.
His six brothers and sisters all preceded him in death including Gwendolyn, Winifred, Richard, Norman, Carol and Joan.
He graduated from Thomas High School in 1937 and served in the U.S. Air Force during WW II. Like his grandfather Stuart, he worked many years in the coal fields. On Jan. 8, 1942, he was married in Oakland, Md., to his beloved Eda Pausek who preceded him in death three years ago. He and Edie reared six children.
He is survived by five children: Mary Ellen (Thayer) and Edward Helmick of Omaha, Ne., Stuart Jr. and Vivian Thayer of Oakland, Md., Deborah (Thayer) and Ashton Curtis of Elkins, Karen (Thayer) Lewondowski of Thomas and Edie Gwen (Thayer) and Matthew McDowell of Davis. Mr. Thayer is also survived by a special niece, Rebecca Wilkins of Keyser; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Thayer was preceded in death by one daughter Kathryn Thayer; and one son-in-law Edward Lewondowski.
Mr. Thayer was a business proprietor in Thomas for over 47 years. Having been a lifelong member of the Thomas United Methodist Church, he served the Lord by being a faithful steward of God’s good creation and cherished, protected and cared for the great outdoors. Dad enjoyed both fly fishing and hunting his entire life.
His love of fly fishing and caretaking of streams and wilderness has been passed onto his loved ones. All of his 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren have benefited from the exemplary life their grandfather lived.
It is befitting to close Stuart’s earthly chapter with Psalm
36:7-9, “How precious is Thy loving kindness, O God! And the children of men
take refuge in the shadow of Thy wings. They drink their fill of the abundance
of Thy house; And Thou dost give them to drink of the river of Thy delights. For
with Thee is the fountain of life; In Thy light we see light.” Amen.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home at Davis today from 5 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at the Thomas United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Winter and the Rev. Jim Martin officiating.
Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements.
