Catherine Bolinger
Catherine Josephine Huffman Bolinger, 84, a resident of Hendricks, departed this life early Sunday morning, Aug. 23, at her home. She had been in declining health since May.
She was born Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1924 at Hendricks, a daughter of the late Cam Lakin Huffman and Martha Snyder Huffman. On May 17, 1941 at Oakland, Md., she was married to Clarence Russell Bolinger Sr., who preceded her in death Nov. 16, 2001. They had celebrated sixty-one years of marriage.
Surviving are three sons Clarence R. “John” Bolinger Jr. and wife Donna of Hendricks, Lakin Lee Bolinger and wife Slona, and Richard “Dick” Bolinger and wife Willetta, all of Parsons; seven daughters Betty Jean Hebb of Ohio, Virginia Mae Carr and husband Lowell of Hendricks, Flodie Louise Lawrence of Hendricks, Sandra Kay Pennington and husband Larry of Hendricks, Grace Ann Lee and husband Carl of Maryland, Ruby Jeanette McCrum and husband Mike of Parsons and Mary Frances Booth and husband Daniel of Mackeyville; nineteen grandchildren, several greatgrandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by two brothers Roy and James Huffman; three sisters Ina Huffman, Nadine Losh and Mable Moyers; one great-granddaughter Abby; and son-in-law Philip Hebb.
She attended the school at Hendricks. She worked for the former Parsons Nursery.
She was an avid WVU Mountaineer and Chicago Cubs Fan and one her favorite pastime was watching wrestling.
There will be no visitation. Private graveside services were conducted on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at the Fansler Cemetery at Hendricks. The Rev. Harley DeLeurere and Adam Snyder officiated and interment followed. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Philip Dumas
Philip Edward Dumas, PH.D., 68 of Morrisville, Pa. and Davis, died on Aug. 19, at his home in Morrisville.
Dr. Dumas was born on Sept. 26, 1940 in New York, N.Y. to Edward and Asta Dumas. He spent his early childhood in Pittsburgh before moving with his family to New York City. He graduated from City College of New York in 1965 and completed his graduate studies in chemistry at the University of South Carolina in 1971. From 1972 until his retirement earlier this year, he worked as a professor in the Chemistry Department of The College of New Jersey, having served as department chair for most of that time. He acted as a mentor to many freshman faculty and students. He was instrumental in obtaining American Chemical Society accreditation for the department and was head of the Chemistry Honors program. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, ham radio, and spending time at his home in West Virginia
Dr. Dumas is survived by his wife Jeanne; his brother David (Charleston, S.C.); daughter Noelle (Dahlonega, Ga.); sons David (Chicago,Ill.) and Bradley (Morrisville, Pa.); and two grandchildren. He will be missed by his large extended family, friends, colleagues, and students. In accordance with his wishes and family traditions, there will not be a formal funeral service. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be given in his name to the American Cancer Society.
Jeffrey Carr
Jeffrey Steven Carr, 54, of Davis, passed away Aug. 23, following an extended battle with cancer.
He was born May 5, 1955 in Elkins, a son of Elmer James and Margaret Lou Kyle Carr.
Also surviving are his wife Sandra S. Carr; three brothers Danny (Mary) Carr of Grundy, Va., Ray (Paula) Carr of Fairmont and Alan (Karen) Carr of Severn, Md.; and one sister Lou Ann (Larry) Jenkins of Lexington, N.C.
Jeff was employed as a welder in the Virginia shipyards and most recently at Mt. Storm Power Plant. He also worked at Blackwater Falls State Park. He enjoyed working on vehicles and being outdoors in the woods.
At the request of the deceased his remains were cremated. Friends were received Tuesday, August 25 at Hinkle Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., the funeral hour. Rev. Todd Rhodes officiated Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Allen Owens

Allen “Roy” Owens, 78, a resident of the Holly Meadows, Riverbend Estates, Parsons, departed this life Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 19, at his home. Death was unexpected.
He was born Thursday, March 26, 1931 at Parsons, a son of the late John Owens and Lela King Owens. On Dec. 18, 1955 at Manchester, N.H., he was married to the former Rita Doris Duhaime, who preceded him in death Sept. 7, 2002. They had celebrated forty-seven years of marriage.
Surviving are one son Jeffrey R. Owens of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter Amy L. Owens of Parsons; three brothers Melvin Owens and Bruce Owens, both of Parsons and David Owens of Roakoke; four sisters Jean Myers of Parsons, Norma Holt of Arthurdale, Susan Owens of Almagorda, N.M. and Geraldene Owens of Greenville, Ohio; and two grandchildren Tabatha Teets and Christopher Owens, both of Parsons.
Preceding him in death are three brothers Edmund Owens, James Owens and June Owens; and two sisters Laura Waybright Owens and Gertrude Forte.
He attended the schools of Valley School #9 at Bull Run. He was a United States Marine Core Class III Veteran, and was an instrument man and served in Korea. He was stationed in Portsmouth, N.H. He was an electrical engineer for Sanders, Inc. in Nashua, N.H. for several years. Roy moved back to W.Va. in 1989 and enjoyed his retirement and loved to golf at the Holly Meadows Golf Course. He really enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, (playing setback), and he loved to go out to eat at “Trisha’s Restaurant.”
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Sunday, Aug. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. On Monday morning, Aug. 24, Mr. Owens was moved to Our Lady Of Mercy Catholic Church, where the Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. The Rev. Father Timothy Grassi presided and interment followed at the Macedonia Cemetery at St. George, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War and the Tucker County Veterans Association conducted full military rites. Ruth Rizer
Ruth Elizabeth Hedrick Parsons Rizer, 95, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Monday morning, Aug. 17, at Valentine’s Personal Care Home in Elkins.
She was born Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1914 at Elkins, a daughter of the late Adam Harnes Hedrick and Virginia Katherine Lamb Hedrick. She was twice married. First on Aug. 23, 1936, she was married to Junior W. Parsons, who preceded her in death Feb. 21, 1975. On April 14, 1979, she was married to William Joe Rizer, who preceded her in death Dec. 10, 1982.
Surviving are four sons Ernest Lee Parsons and wife Peggy, Jerry Glenn Parsons and wife Yvonne, Roger Lynn “Joe” Parsons and wife Alice and James Dale Parsons and wife Bonnie, all of Parsons; nine grandchildren Peggy Sue Parsons Kumpf and husband Bill, Becky Parsons Polomski and husband Henry, Jerry Parsons Jr. and wife Patty, Sherry Parsons Ramsey and husband Terry, Donna Parsons Hardy and husband Jeff, Edward Parsons and wife Lisa, Joey Parsons, Lori Parsons, Brenda Ruth Parsons Overstreet and husband Dwight; eleven great-grandchildren April and Ernie Kumpf, Casey Polomski, Lucy and Zach Parsons, Haley and Jayden Ramsey, Eddie Parsons, Mariah and Austin Parsons and Christian Hardy; and several nieces and nephews.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by three brothers Glenn, Vernon and Gilbert Hedrick; one half-brother Robert Wooden; one half-sister Texie Kisamore; and her companion of nearly twenty years Charles D. Arnold, who passed away Feb. 22, 2000.
She attended the schools of Randolph County and Parkersburg Community College. She worked as a car sales person, Avon representative and legal aid for senior citizens. She was a homemaker that enjoyed cooking, gardening, and working in her flower beds. Another favorite past time was coin collecting. She was known for her love of animals, especially cats. Over the years she cared for many strays and loved them with all of her heart. She strongly supported PETA and the Humane Society. During her “golden years” she enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and family.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Valentine Personal Care Home for their tender loving care.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Thursday, Aug. 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Friday, Aug. 21 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Harley DeLeurere offi ciated and interment followed at the Bethel Cemetery at Holly Meadows. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
