William Grow 

William B. Grow, 79, of Frankfort, Ky. departed this life on Aug. 12 at the St. Josephs Hospital in Lexington, Ky. following a short illness.

He was born Dec. 19, 1927 at Thomas, a son of the late Earnest Earl and Blanceh Elizabeth Perks Grow of Parsons. 

He is survived by his daughter Penny Darlene McDonald and husband Bill of Frankfort, Ky.; two sons Glenford Grown and wife Rocke of Paris, Ky, and Tex Conley and wife Janice of Lexington, Ky.; two sisters Betty Knotts of Parsons and his twin Margaret A. Roy of Blackman Heights; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.   

He was preceded in death by his wife Zeda Hall grow; two brothers Earl W. Grow and Harry E. Grow; and three sisters Georgie Dumire, Mary Dougherty and Dorothy Armentrout. 

He attended school in Thomas.  Mr. Grow was a U.S. Army Veteran being stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. and serving tours in Korea and Germany.  

Before entering the service, he was employed by the W.V. Department of Highways at Thomas.  He was employed by Blanton Lumber Company, and later retired from Fruit of Loom in Frankfort, Ky. 

Services were conducted at the Harrod Brothers Memorial Chapel, Frankfort, Ky. on Aug. 16 wit the Rev. Mike Denney officiating.  Final resting place was at Sunset Memorial gardens.  Military honors were observed at the graveside by VFW Post 4075. 

George A. Moats

George Alfred Moats, 72, a former resident of Parsons, and a resident of Spartansburg, Penn., departed this life Thursday, Sept. 6,  at the Corry Memorial Hospital.

He was born Saturday, March 30, 1935, at St. George, a son of the late James Clarence and Mary Ellen Poling Moats. On Aug. 11, 1956, at Angloa, Ind., he was married to the former Freda Louise Blair, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, William Moats and wife Ann and David Moats and wife Annette, all of Corry, Penn.; one daughter, Wanda Caylor, and husband Leonard of Spring Creek, Penn.; one brother, Clifford Moats, and wife Nina of Corry, Penn; ten grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Moats was raised in Parsons where he was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1953.  He then moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he was employed at Cleveland Pneumatic Tools as a machinist. After four years with the company, he moved back to West Virginia and worked on road construction and was a truck driver. In 1965, he was hired by Dow Chemical in West Virginia and was transferred to Corry in 1966. From 1968 until 1975 he owned and operated a dairy farm in East Branch. He also worked for Erie Plastics as a tool and die marker and then for Tonnard Mfg. in the maintenance dept. He was a former employee at Columbus Industries in Corry and in 1982 he began working for Foamex where he worked for more than twenty years. He most recently worked in maintenance at Wal-Mart in Corry. He was a member of West Spring Creek Congregational Church. He was a Penn. State Constable for more than twenty five years. In 2005, he was inducted into the Parsons Hall of Fame. He raised over twenty thousand dollars for Relay for Life, he was a member of Future Farmers of America in West Virginia, had coached Corry Little League for more than ten years, was a member of East Branch and Watson Grange where he served as master for fourteen years. 

Mr. Moats enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday, Sept. 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. Pastor Larry Poling will officiate and interment will follow in Pifer Mountain Cemetery at St. George. The family suggest that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Pifer Mountain Cemetery in care of Louise Turner, Route 1, Box 148AA, Belington, W.Va. 26250. Florence Schoonover

Florence “Marie” Sayger Schoonover, 80, a resident of Parsons, departed this life Saturday evening, Sept. 8, 2007, at Nesbitt Personal Care Home in Hendricks.

She was born Sunday, Aug. 14, 1927, at Craig, a daughter of the late Lonnie Bains Sayger and Bertha Zimmerman Sayger.  On April 7, 1947, at Long Island, N.Y., she was married to Carl Ward “Tater” Schoonover Sr., who survives. They had celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Also surviving are four sons, Carl Ward Schoonover Jr. and wife Elizabeth of Conover, N.C., Glen Taylor Schoonover of Parsons, John William Schoonover and wife Vicki of Loganville, Pa., and Patrick Kent Schoonover and wife Sharon of Elkins; two daughters, Susan Marie Randolph of Parsons and Letha Lynn Kahl and husband Wayne of Dover, Pa.; one sister, Almeda Jane Harner of Cornwall Manor, Pa.; fourteen grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son James Robert Schoonover; one grandson David Christopher Randolph; and one baby brother John Banis Sayger.

She attended the Hamrick School at Hendricks and was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1946. She was a graduate of Morgantown Business College in 1947 and she attended Davis & Elkins College. She had delivered newspapers at Hambleton and Hendricks as a child. She had worked for the former Flossie’s Restaurant. She was a former secretary for Parsons High School and worked for the Tucker County Clerk. She left Tucker County in 1953 and worked as a secretary for B.F. Goodrich Co. in Ohio, and then for the former C&P Telephone Co. in Oakland, Md. She was a former employee of West Virginia Pulp & Paper Co. in Luke. In 1964, she moved to Reisterstown, Md., where she worked for Black & Decker Co. She was a former employee of Bendixs Field Corp. and then John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory where she received an award (First Man On The Moon Space Program) and retired in 1994 from Catonsville Community College in Maryland. She was a yard sale and antique enthusiast.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Father Timothy Grassi will officiate and interment will follow in Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Florence “Marie” Sayger Schoonover. Virginia Walker 

Virginia Dare Lipscomb Walker, 77, of Cumberland, Md. died Friday, September 7 at WMHS Memorial Campus.

She was born May 18, 1930 in Hambleton, a daughter of the late Wayne B. and Hazel M. Morris Lipscomb.

Survivors include her two daughters, Margaret D. “Diannia” Breighner and husband LeRoy Long Beach, Miss. and Virginia F. “Penny” James and husband Garland Cumberland, Md.; one brother, Calvin Lipscomb, Homewood Addition; four grandchildren, Leroy Martin Breighner II and wife Heather, Penny Lane James, Ginny Lynn Clayton and husband Eric and Garland Stevenson James II and wife Misty; eight great-grandchildren, Carrie James, Kristopher James, Julie James, Eric Clayton, Haley James, Alexis Clayton, Jessie James and Trinity James; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her four sisters Eugenia “Jean” Long, Patricia Burns, Mickie Allen, and Dutch Mortzfeldt; and three brothers Wayne, Bob and Bud Lipscomb.

Mrs. Walker had been a nurse’s aide at the old Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland Nursing Home, and more recently at Frostburg Village Nursing Home.  She belonged to St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Goodfellowship Club.  Mrs. Walker was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliaries of Henry Hart Post #1411, VFW and   Ft. Cumberland Post #13, American Legion

Friends were received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7-9 p.m.  A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Wednesday at 9 a.m. with Father Milton Hepsley as celebrant.  Intermemtn will follow in Parsons Cemetery at 1 p.m..

Serving as pallbearers will be Eric Clayton, John Burns, Tony Burns, Charles Calvin Lipscomb, Jr., Billy Matthews, Lawrence William Long, Jr., Frank Morgan, and Dave Witt.
