Mona M. Carr

Mona May White Carr, 76, a resident of the Dry Fork community, Hendricks, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday morning, Sept. 25, 2008, at 7:30 a.m. at her home. She suffered with COPD for many years.

She was born Friday, Jan. 22, 1932, at Wymer, the youngest daughter of the late John S. and Agnes Jordon White.

On July 10, 1948, at Parsons, she was united in marriage to Troy Arthur Carr, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Arthur D. "Sonny" Carr and friend, Patsy Bonner, and Matthew Lane Carr, all of Hendricks; one daughter, Rebecca Ann Carr Helmick and husband, Jerry, of Mt. Zion; three sisters, Lucille Armstead of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Vallie Davis of Elkins and Elsi Massick of Trenton, N.J.; five grandchildren, the Rev. Jerry Lee Helmick Jr. and wife, Rogina, of Elkins, Casey Yvonne Carr Hedrick and husband, Roger, of Elkins, Jason D. Carr and wife, Mandi, of Gig Harbor, Wash., Malinda Erin Carr of Harman and Dillon Joel Carr and wife, Vicky, of Kerns; seven great-grandchildren, Caleb Helmick, Joshua Helmick, Rachel Helmick, Aiden Hedrick and Zaha Hedrick, Makayla Carr and Zada Carr; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were five brothers, Gordon Lambert, Harry White, Charlie White, Bill White and Jack Elza; five sisters; Marie Lambert, Lori White, Katie White, Geneva Abbott and Ruby Roberts; one grandson, Scotty Lynn Helmick; and one great-grandson, Stephen Todd Helmick.

She attended the schools of Randolph and Tucker counties. She was a Christian by faith. She worked in many churches with youth groups and she was a great counselor. She was owner and operator of the former Long Branch Cafe in Parsons and the former Midget Gift Shop in Dryfork. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a loving mother to countless others that she touched.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Pat Cassidy and the Rev. James Martin will officiate and interment will follow in Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Hospice Care, P.O. Box 193, Parsons, W.Va. 26287. Grace Gainer

Grace P. Gainer, 95, a resident of Parsons, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center. 

She was born Aug. 10, 1913 at Parsons, a daughter of the late Lloyd W. Shaffer and Annie S. Nestor Shaffer. On March 10, 1932 at Oakland, Md., she was married to Braxton C. Gainer who preceded her in death on February 23, 1964. 

She is survived by one son, Joseph Gainer and wife Bonnie of Parsons and two brothers, Roy Shaffer and wife Ellen and Guy Shaffer and wife Helen, all of Ohio; two grandchildren, Michael Steven Gainer and Cherry of Sunset Beach, N.C. and Tammy Lothes and husband Anthony of Elkins; two great grandchildren, Ryan Price and wife Jaime of Elkins, Alegra Brady and husband Shawn of Belington ;and three great-great grandchildren, Katelyn Morgan Price, Samantha Joellen Price and Hailee Morgan Brady. 

Preceding her in death were four brothers, Howard, Ray, Marvin and Claude W. Shaffer and three sisters, Hazel Phillips, Mearl Shaffer Johnson and Colleen Shaffer Parks. 

Mrs. Gainer had worked at Dorman Wool Milling at Parsons, at the Tucker County Health Department and for Stevens Florist prior to her retirement. 

She was one of the Cookie Ladies, who raised money for flood control projects in Parsons and for the Veteranís Memorial  in Parsons. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Parsons. 

A funeral services was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27 at the First United Methodist Church of Parsons.  REv. Jeff Anderson officaited and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery.  The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins was in charge of the arrangements ofr Grace P. Ruth Mercante

Ruth Marion Carr Mercante, 65 of Middletown, Del. passed away at Christiana Hospital on Friday, SEpt. 12.  

She was born in Thomas on Nov. 24 1942, the daughter of the late Willis H. Carr and Sylvia White Carr. 

She was predeceased by her husband John Mercante; and her daughter Faith Grant. 

She is survived by her daughter Deborah A. Mercante; four grandchildren Kristin, Lucas and Angel Grant and Aaliyah Mercante; three brothers Noah Carr of Newark, Del. and Chalres S. Carr and Robert L. Carr, both of Thomas; three sisters Rosalie Ford of Oakland, Md. and Anne V. Wilson and Glenomia M. Clark, both of Thomas.  She also had many nieces and nephews. 

She was a graduate of Mountain High School, with the class of 1961.  She was employed as a window washer and then a supervisor at American Seaboard Inc. in Wilmington, Del. where she worked for more than 30 years. 

Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Living Waters Church of God in Newark, Del.  Interment was at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Bear, Del.
