Lettie Cale
Lettie B. Cale, 60, of Parsons passed away peacefully at her home on Oct. 1, 2007.
Lettie is survived by three children Roger, Duane and Lettie Cale; and three grandchildren Bailey Cale and Kaleb and Lily Lester.
In lieu of flowers, Lettie asked that donations be made to the WV Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
James Hawkshaw ![]()
James M. Hawkshaw passed away on Sept 27. He was born in Thomas. He served in the US Army for 32 years.
He was the beloved husband of Betty Hawkshaw of Alexandria, Va.; and the father of Kathleen Thorpe of Front Royal, Va. HE is survived by three grandchildren Jennifer, James and Patricia all of Front Royal, Va.; and a cousin Paul Gallagher of Ohio.
Friends were received at the Everly Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, Va. on Sunday, Sept. 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Rita's Catholic Church, 3815 Russell Rd., Alexandria, Va. on Monday Oct. 1 at 1 a.m. Interment followed at Mount Comfort Cemetery.
Charles Humphrey ![]()
Charles Ashton Humphrey, 84, a former resident of Hambleton, and more recently a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home at Thomas, departed this life Wednesday morning, Sept. 26, at the nursing home.
He was born Tuesday Jan. 2, 1923, at Hambleton, a son of the late Fitzhugh and Bessie Rhoades Humphrey. He was twice married, first to the former Dorothy L. Heckler, and second to the former Geneva P. Plant, both preceding him in death.
Surviving are four sons, Charles W. Humphrey and wife Cynthia of Montrose, Edwin F. Evans and wife Lora of Parsons, Brian K. Humphrey and wife Jacqueline S. of Walthoursville, Ga., and Charles Humphrey Jr. and wife Jessica of Beckley; two daughters, Sheila A. Marsh and Alfred R. D’Arpe of Hambleton and Carol L. Smith and husband Charles of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sisters, Philippine Louise “Peenie” Waybright of Beverly and Emma L. Waybright of Beverly; thirteen grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ellis Parker Humphrey and Floyd
Humphrey; five sisters, Ruth Evans, Hardenia Wilson, Lucille Humphrey, Olive M.
Humphrey and Erma Jean Stahl; and one step-son, Ronald S. Heckler.
He attended the schools in Tucker County. He was a veteran of the United States Army
having served during World War II in the 182nd American Division Machine Gunner
Hvy 605 in Northern Solomon’s during the South Philippines Liberation where he
received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze stars, Philippine
Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and Bronze Arrow Head
Victory World War II Medal.
Prior to his retirement from Parsons Footwear, he was employed at the former Dorman Mills in Parsons for many years.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, children and grandchildren and he loved to hunt and fish. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Cortland Acres Staff for the many years of caring and compassion. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Monday, Oct.1 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Loren Metzner officiated and interment followed at the Sunrise Cemetery at Hambleton where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War conducted the full military rites. Cynthia Roberts
Cynthia C. "Polly" Roberts, 76, of Lowell, Ind. passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 18. She was the daughter of Elmer Prost and Florence Propst Schilansky.
She is survived by two sons Allen (and Wendy) Roberts and Ashton (and Judy) Roberts, all of Lowell, Ind.; four grandchildren Scott and Amber Roberts of Lowell, Ind., Stephanie (and Michael) Colson of Lowell, Ind. and Matthew Roberts of Indianapolis, Ind.; one great-grandchild McKenzie Grace Colson at home; one brother James (and Doloris) Propst of Parsons; one sister Betty Lefkowitz of Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Allen Roberts.
She was a graduate of Parsons High School, class of 1950. Polly had her own office as a real estate broker-agent for 20 years. She was retired from the Century 21 after more than ten years of service. She was the former owner of Don's Restaurant in Lowell, Ind. and currently was the manager and a real estate broker-agent for Langen Realty in Lowell, Ind. She was previously the president of the Chamber of Commerce and was a current member of the Lowell Town Council
Funeral service were held on Sept. 22 at Sheets Funeral Home in Lowell, Ind. with Pastor Bill Dunfee officiating. Burial followed at Lowell Memorial Cemetery.
