John Baker
John W. Baker, 63, of Oakland, died Nov. 8 at the home of his son in St. George.
He was born on Jan. 1, 1943 in Cumberland, Md. a son of the late Harry A. and Sadie A. Uphold baker.
He is survived by three sons John W. Baker, Harry A. Baker, both of St. George and Steven Orr of Martisnburg; two sisters Doris L. Thomas of Oakland and Mabel J. Bowling of Mercersburg, Pa.; one brother Edwin Winnie of Elmira, N.Y.; and four grandchildren Joseph Tunney, Matthew Goguen, Sean Goguen and Brian Goguen.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beatrice Orr Baker and a brother William E. Baker.
He was an acoustic ceiling installer.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, 32 S. Second St., Oakland from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9 and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10. Services were held at the funeral home on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Charles Langford officiating. Interment followed in the Blooming rose Cemetery, Friendsville.
Benjamin Bright ![]()
Benjamin Cleon Bright, 68, of Needmore Pa., passed away, Saturday, Nov. 11, near his home.
He was born Wednesday, July 27, 1938 in Elk, a son of the late Martin V. Bonner and the late Rosa Bell Bright. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Jeane Bright. on May 8, 2006.
He is survived by three sons Benjamin Andrew Bright & wife Paula of Falling Waters, Matthew Lynn Bright & wife Karen of Newburg and Nathan Eric Bright & wife Alicia of Hendersonville, N.C. four sisters, Londa Bowman of Cresaptown, Md., Hallena Deitz of Meadow Bridge, Eva Moore of LaVale, Md. and Ellen Zukas of Balitmore, Md.; two brothers Van Davis of Hendricks and Calving Bright of Hendricks; and grandchildren Sean, Christina, Tom and Josh.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Laura Susan Bright; and brothers Howard Davis and Nathan H. Bright.
He was employed at Mack Truck Inc. retiring in 2000 after 31 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Korea. He was a member of the Berkeley Springs Church of Christ. He also was an avid hunter and beekeeper and enjoyed woodworking, and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church and following the service. memorial services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m., from the Berkeley Springs Church of Christ, 509 south Green Street Berkeley Springs, W. Va. with the Minster Douglas A. Penny Officiating. Interment will be on Thursday , Nov. 16, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the High Ridge Family Cemetery in Elk, West Virginia.
Memorial donations may be mad to the Berkeley Springs Church of Christ, 509 South Green Street, Berkeley springs, W. Va 26519. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home 1331 Eastern Blvd., North Hagerstown, Md.
Ruth Cuppett
Ruth Wolverton Cuppett, 91, died Friday, Nov. 10, at Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, where she had resided since March 2001.
She was born April 21, 1915 in Balmorhea, Texas, a daughter of the late Dr. James Hanson Wolverton Sr., and Ruth (Grant) Wolverton.
Survivors include a daughter Ruth C. and husband John A. Buchanan of Chalk Hill, Pa.; a son, David E. Cuppett III and wife Karen of Canaan Valley; eight grandchildren Anne A. Buchanan, Ardmore, Pa.; Kerra B. and husband Jeffrey J. French, Morristown, NJ; James Grant and wife Kristen Buchanan, Eighty-four, Pa.; and Jill B. and husband Steven L. Hamel, Mt. Lebanon, Pa., David E. IV and wife Amy Cuppett of Four Oaks, N.C., B. Scott and wife Lisa Cuppett of Rockwall, Texas, Christopher J. and wife Rita Cuppett of Fairfax, Va. and Robyn N. Cuppett of Radford, V; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law Harold K. Carvey Sr. of Keyser, a sister-in-law Mrs. Geraldine R. Wolverton of Fayetteville, N.C.; several cousins and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Judge David Earle Cuppett Jr., who died June 18, 1990. An infant daughter, Cornelia Cresap Cuppett, preceded her parents in death on June 28, 1941; four siblings are deceased: Dr. James H. Wolverton Jr., Kathryn W. Carvey, Harriet W. Hackney, and Dr. William Roger Wolverton Jr.
A graduate of Piedmont High School, she earned her B.A. degree in Sociology from West Virginia University in 1935. She worked in her father's medical office before her marriage on May 1, 1937, after which the couple moved to Petersburg.
Mrs. Cuppett taught at Petersburg Grade School in 1944-45 and at Petersburg High School from 1958-60. A member of Petersburg Presbyterian church, she was in women's circles and served a term as secretary of Winchester Presbyterial. She was an early member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 78, Grant Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Petersburg Chapter #146 Order of Eastern Star. She was an alumnae of chi Omega Fraternity, national social sorority. As a direct descendant of Col. Thomas Cresap, early 1700's pathfinder, pioneer, and patriot, she became a charter member of the south Branch Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Cuppett's past interests were playing the piano, bridge, golf, traveling and visiting family and friends.
Family received friends Sunday, Nov. 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home. Funeral Services were held Monday, Nov. 13 at Petersburg Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Cardot officiating, assisted by pastor Tommy George. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Thomas.
Suggested memorials include Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg Presbyterian Church, Piedmont Presbyterian Church, Petersburg High School Scholarship Fund, Grant County Library, and Grant County Creative Arts Center Fund, or charity of choice.
Violet Hradsky
Violet Marie Hradsky, 83, of Thomas, passed away Nov. 11 at Winchester Medical Center of Winchester, VA.
She was born April 3, 1923 in Pierce, a daughter of the late Jasper Simon Sines and Tracy Orel Purnell Sines.
She was a loving wife to Joseph Henry Hradsky wom she met in 1942. At the age of 21, on Nov. 5, 1944, they were married and celebrated 61 years of marriage until Joseph's death on Jan. 12, 2006.
Survivors include a daughter Marie Elaine and husband Donald Lorenzo Evans of Augusta; two sisters Leona Edwards of Thomas and Opal Ragno of Baltimore, Md.; one grandson Russell Paul "Rusty" and wife Becky Colley of Clarksburg; three great grandsons Corely Russell, Logan William and Tanner Joseph Colley, all of Clarksburg.
She was preceded in death by one brother Arvin Sines; and five sisters Luella James, Louise Bland, Velma Hymes, Mabel Sines and Eloise Sines.
She was employed for 12 years by Levenson and Klein Furniture in Baltimore, Md. Violet was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was loved by everyone who knew her. She was a member of the first Presbyterian Church of Thomas.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 13 from 2 to 7 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at Hinkle Funeral chapel at 11 a.m. with Rev. Todd Rhodes officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Yvonne Lambert
Yvonne Huff Lambert, age 85 years, a resident of Parsons, and more recently a resident of the Elkins Regional Convalescent Center at Elkins, departed this life Monday morning, Nov. 6, 2006, in Davis Memorial Hospital at Elkins.
She was born Nov. 14, 1920, at Parsons, a daughter of the late Howard Huff and Sylvia Nestor Huff. On Nov. 1, 1941, at Oakland, Md., she was married to Herman Donald Lambert Sr., who preceded her in death July 29, 2002.
Surviving are two sons, Howard Elliott Lambert and wife Patricia of Perkiomenville, Pa., and William Wythe Lambert and wife Lois of Parsons; one daughter, Donna Mayfield Schoonover and husband Bill of Grafton; one stepson, H. Donald Lambert Jr. and wife Elizabeth Jean of Elkins; 17 grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren.
She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Huff and William Howard “Bud” Huff Jr.; and two sisters, Sylvia Marie Kisamore and Eleanor Jean Barrett.
She attended the schools of Randolph County and was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1938. She had worked for the former Clover Farm at Parsons. She retired as deputy county clerk of Tucker County having served eighteen and one half years under D.K. Goff and Nina Buchanan, County Clerks. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, where she played the organ and piano and she was a 50-year member of the St. Paul’s United Methodist Women. She had served as president of the United Methodist Women and as a Sunday school teacher. She was pianist for Tucker County Senior Citizens Choir, The Goldenaires, from 1984 until 1994.
The family received friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006 at 2 p.m. The Rev. J. Michael Lantz officiated and interment followed in Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Yvonne Huff Lambert. James Shrout
James E. Shrout, 75, of fort Meyers, Fla. died Sept 29, 2006 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
He was born Nov. 21, 1930 in Parsons to his parents Turner and Ellasue Shrout.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Shirley Shrout; two daughters, Rita Jordan of fort Myers and Susan Johnson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one brother David Shrout of North Carolina; one sister Janet Newman of Fairmont; and his grandson Jeremy Jordan.
Jim graduated from Parsons High School with the class of 1948, from West Virginia University in 1953 with a Bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He retired as vice president of Aeronca, Inc. in 1991 after 38 years of service. He was instrumental in developing and patenting aircraft designs and worked on SST aircraft and Apollo Space craft designs.
Jim moved to Cape corla in 1991 from Middleton, Ohio. He was a member of Cape Coral First United Methodist church, Masonic Lodge in Middleton, Ohio, New Residents club of Cape Coral and the Junior Achievement Program.
A memorial service was conducted Saturday, Oct. 7, at Cape Coral First United Methodist Church.
Joyce White
Joyce Ann White, 59, of Thomas, passed away Nov. 8, 2006, at her home.
She was born March 22, 1947, at Thomas, a daughter of the late Olie Luther Carr and Gladys May Shaffer Carr.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest O. White; one son, Ernest O. “Bud” White II of Madison; two daughters, Eloise White and Jennifer White, both of Thomas; two brothers, Gerald R. Carr of Mayville, N.D. and David M. Carr of Waldorf, Md.; three sisters, Betty Moore of Waldorf, Md., Dolores McCutcheon of Lookout and Evelyn Armentrout of Hughesville, Md.; six grandchildren, Jessica, Kayla, Michael, Kara, Krista and Levi White; and one great-grandchild, Zobiana Dillsworth.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles L. and Donald E. Carr.
Joyce worked as a cook at Barney Gedwillis Mt. Top Senior Center. She was a member of Blackwater Rebekah Lodge 274 where she served as Past Grand Noble and Past District Deputy, Walter Chapter #43 OES, FOE #936 Ladies Auxiliary, Red Hat Ladies, she was a volunteer of Friends of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Mt. Top Outpost Library committee, Mt. Top Senior Center travel committee and was a member of the Church of the Wilderness.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 10 from 2-4 p.m. and 6- 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at Hinke Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Pam Scott officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
