Alice Canon
Alice Lucretia Canon, 84, of Thomas died Nov. 23, at her home.
She was born March 17, 1923, in Thomas, a daughter of the late Walter Grant Helmick and Mary Belle Shaffer Helmick.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Eugene (and Phyllis) Helmick of Davis and Carl Brenton (and Janet) Canon of Thomas; two daughters, Romaine Carol (and Ed) Arnold and Betsy Lucretia (and Ferman) Whitehair, all of Davis; two sisters, Leona Cleland of Pomeroy, Ohio, and Romaine Stanton of Phoenix, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Willis C. Canon, one son, Terance Canon; four brothers, Hayes, Herbert, Roy & Eugene; three sisters, Nellie Bunnell, Jessie Marshall and Flo Dove.
Mrs. Canon was a employed as a bookkeeper for Fairfax Sand and Gravel for many years. She was a charter member of Canaan Valley Baptist Church and a former member of Rebekah Lodge and Macbeeses.
Elmo Miller ![]()
Elmo W. Miller 91, of Bruceton Mills, died Monday, Nov. 19 at his home.
He was born May 12, 1916 in St. George, a son of the late George C. and Nora Beatrice Adams Miller.
He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. After receiving a Master of Science degree in Agriculture from West Virginia University, Mr. Miller was employed as an extension agent in Marion County and later at WVU where he served as an adjunct professor. During the "Bay of Pigs" in the early 1960's, he was involved with emergency planning for West Virginia.
Elmo is survived by his wife Maxine Menefee Miller; two sons and their spouses Michael E. and Regina K. Miller of Carthage, N.Y. and David and Nancy K. Miller of Philippi; a sister Ruth Geer of Elkins; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
A memorial service was held at the Carl R. Spear Funeral Home in Bruceton Mills-Brandonville on Friday, Nov.2 3 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Violet L. Petso officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in the Terra Alta Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army, 110 E. Main St., Kingwood, WV 26537. Grace Pennington
Grace Irene Pennington, 93, of Stringtown, passed away at Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Thomas on Nov. 25.
She was born June 4, 1914, at Laneville, a daughter of the late John Joseph Snyder and Ella M. Lawrence. Her husband, Asa Pennington, preceded her in death one Dec. 25, 1996.
She is survived by one daughter, Juanita (and Lewis) Stewart of Stringtown; two grandchildren, Deborah Sanders and Regina (and Tom) Johnson, both of Gainesville, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Tommy (and Cristi) Johnson of Griffin, Ga., and Eric Johnson of Gainesville, Ga.; and one great-great-granddaughter, Evie Johnson.
She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Brook Collins; and three half-sisters, Mary Collins Crossland, Annabelle Collins and Pauline Collins McDermott.
Mrs. Pennington was a housewife and was owner and operator of Pennington’s Grocery in Stringtown for 25 years. She was a lifelong member of Red Creek Bethel Church of the Brethren and was a member of Blackwater Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was active in the Flanagan Hill Senior Center and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. Grace enjoyed the community and the people in it.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home on Tuesday, Nov. 27 between 4 and 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Red Creek Bethel Church of the Brethren (Lanesville Road) at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Moyer officiating. Interment will follow in Buena Cemetery, Canaan Valley. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
William White
William John White, 86, a resident of the Fork Mountain Community, Parsons, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 20, 2007, at his home. He had been in declining health.
He was born Thursday, March 17, 1921, at Middle Mountain, Randolph County, a son of the late John Sullivan White and Agnas Stella Jordon White. On Dec. 24, 1946, at Parsons, he was married to the former Julia Annetti Carr, who preceded him in death on May 1, 1999. They had celebrated fifty-two years of marriage.
Surviving are six sons, Johnny White and wife Lillian, Gary White and wife Kathy, Fred White and wife Beverly, and Chuck White and wife Becky, all of Parsons, Ronald White and wife Jeanie of Alexandria, Va., Roger Carr and wife Linda of Hambleton; three daughters, Sandra Kresge and husband Richard, Sharon Eye and husband John and Aggie Arnold and husband Clyde, all of Parsons; four sisters, Lucille Armstead, Vallie Davis, Elsie Masie and Mona Carr; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are four brothers, Gordon, Harry, Charlie White and Jack Elza; five sisters, Marie, Lora, Katy, Geneva and Ruby; and one grandson, Gary David White.
He attended the schools of Randolph County. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, serving during World War II. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps during 1935. He worked for the Terra Alta and Elkins stockyards. He was a logger, worked on various pipelines throughout the United States. He worked for the WV Division of Highways as a Truck Driver, retiring in 1981 and he was a lifelong farmer. He was known for calling square dances. He was an avid outdoorsman, loved to tell stories about his family history and was loved by all that knew him.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Saturday, Nov. 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Pat Cassidy officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, where H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion and Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War conducted full military rites.
