On this 11th day of October A.D. one thousand eight hundred and
sixty-six personally appeared before me Friend Cox, Clerk of the Circuit
Court in afore said County and State, Emelia Shreve, a resident of Grant in
Wetzel County, State of West Virginia aged 38 years, who being first duly
sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in
order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the Act of Congress
approved July 4th 1862. That she is the widow of Elias Shreve, late of Wetzel
County, State of West Virginia who was a Private in Company H commanded by
Capt. Reed in the 1ST Regiment of West Virginia Infantry commanded by Col.
Thoburn, in the war of 1861, who died on the 22nd day of July 1864 at
Harrisonburgh in Rockingham County, State of Virginia that his death was
caused by gun shot wound received while in the service of the United
States-proof of which she would respectfully refer you to the muster or pay
rolls of said Company.
She further declares that she was married to the said Elias Shreve
on the 24TH day of February 1845, at John Fonners in Greene County, State of
Pennsylvania, by John Fonner a Magistrate and that her name before marriage
was Emelia Edgel. She further states that she believes there is no public
record of her said marriage, and there is no private or family record, and
that the best evidence that she is able to procure of her said marriage, is
the annexed affidavits. That her husband the aforesaid Elias Shreve died on
the day above mentioned, and that she has remained a widow ever since that
period, as will appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed. She also
declares that she had by her husband five children, the names, date of birth
and residence of each under 16 years of age at the decease of her said
husband, is as follows: Jacob Shreve Born August 23, 1851, Perdilla Shreve
Born November 8, 1853, Isaac M. Shreve Born December 18, 1856, Jonathan R.
Shreve Born April 26, 1859, Virginia Shreve Born July 2, 1861 and all reside
in Wetzel County, West Virginia. She further declares that she has not in any
manner engaged in, or aided, or abetted the rebellion in the United States.
She hereby appoints John H. Hoffman and Company, of Morgantown,
West Virginia, her Attorney, with Power of Substitute, to prosecute her claim
and to receive the certificate when issued.

Also, personally appeared William Lemasters a resident of Grant in
Wetzel County, State of West Virginia, and Elias Lemasters a resident of
Grant in Wetzel County, State of West Virginia, persons whom I certify to be
respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me, first duly sworn,
say they were present and saw Mrs. Emelia Shreve make her mark, to the
foregoing declaration and they further swear that they have been personally
acquainted with the said Emelia Shreve and her husband Elias Shreve who was a
Private in Company " H" commanded by Capt. Reed in the 1ST Regiment of West
Virginia Infantry commanded by Col. Thoburn in the war of 1861, for upwards
of ten years, and know that they lived together as man and wife, and were so
reputed, and never heard the same doubted. That from general report they know
the said Emelia Shreve was married to the aforesaid soldier at John Fonners
in Greene County, State of Pennsylvania on the 24TH day of February 1845, by
John Fonner a Magistrate, and that her name before marriage was Emelia
Edgel. That from general report they know that the said soldier died at
Harrisonburgh in Rockingham County, State of Virginia, on or about the 22nd
day of July 1864, while in the service of the United States; and that the
said Emelia Shreve has remained a widow ever since that period; also, that
the said soldier left the following children under 16 years of age at the
time of his decease, their names, date of birth and residence is as
follows:(see previous paragraphs).
They further declare that the claimant has not in any way been
engaged in or aided, or abetted the rebellion in the United States-that their
knowledge of the identity of her husband with the soldier, is derived from
seeing him while in the service as aforesaid. They further declare that they
have no interest in this claim, any way whatever and do reside as above
stated.

STATE OF WEST VA. On this 23rd day of October A.D.
1866, personally appeared before the subsciber, a Justice in and for the
County aforesaid, duly authorized to administer oaths, William Lemasters a
resident of said County, to me well known as credible witness, and who, being
by me first duly sworn, doth on his oath state that he is acquainted with
Mrs. Emelia Shreve the above applicant for Bounty-that he had known her for
10 years past, that he has examined her family record-that he believes the
same to genuine-that it is contained in a book purporting to be "the family
record" and printed in the year 1855; and that the said record, as far as
relates to the marriage of the said applicant and the soldier above named,
and of his death, is as follows, which is an exact copy of the same: the
marriage is not in the family record. and that the said deponent is not
interested in the claim.
SUBSCRIBED AND SWORN TO, the day and year first above written, before me, and
