(W)VA, and his mother's name as Sophia Fluharty.


170. Lamar Chalfant Powell

Lamar was educated in the district schools and while young entered hisfather's printing company, becoming a journeyman printer. In 1874 hemarried Lucy Reed, a teacher of New Martinsville, WV. They shortly movedto Fairmont and became the parents of four sons. For years three sonsworked with their father in publishing the weekly paper "West Virginian".Lamar Powell became owner, publisher and editor of this paper, whichsupported the Republican Party. He served a term in the West VirginiaLegislature, was a member of Fairmont Masonic Lodge #9 and heldmembership in the Methodist Protestant Church. His wife, who had sistersserving as missionaries, was a active member of the First PresbyterianChurch. The Powells built a large brick house on Cleveland Avenue(formerly Barney St.). Quoting: "He was listed among the leadingprominent citizens of Fairmont".
