SPECIAL EVENTS
The kitchen help was terrific! Ruth, Aunt Zetta, Aunt Gladys, Aunt Beulah, Esther, Doris and Faye Ann were the busy ones in here. They were really busy all day, too.
Heading the diaper brigade were Edna, Loretta, Grancis and the Grandma's helped too. They really changed a lot of "seat covers".
Playing badminton and horseshoe was the main diversion for the day. Norma, Bob, Jimmy, Wanema, Rosie, Charles, Edwin and Loretta engaged in a real battle. There never was any out-of-bounds, so the girls lost. The fellas cheated ! Late in the day, Uncle Charles and Bob Ney decided to play. I'm not sure who won, but these two wield a MEAN RACKET.
Down at the horseshoe pit, Uncle Charles, Uncle Ed, Uncle Ray, Lee, Neil, Gerald, Jimmy P., Jim Co.., Red, Edwin, Charles, Sherald, and I guess about all the men-pitched horseshoe, but I don't know who won---these guys are such big lears!!!
Down at the barn we could find Cindy, Karen, Debbie, GeeGee, Dana, Joyce and David. The sand box too, was busy with Mike (two of them), Lee, Chuckie, Jimmy Coll, Cissy, Bobbi, Phillip and Pat, busy throwing sand at each other.
We were really pleased that Edwin was here from Oregon, and Geneva here from New York. Lee and Edna came from Michigan. Aunt Gladys from W.Va. & her family also, so there were five states represented.
Aunt Gladys had the biggest family there. Her kids and their kids numbered 21.
Of the grandchildren of Mary & Wesley, Sherald had the biggest family (4)
Lee and Edna had the youngest family (3 under 37 months) Loretta and Jim have 3 under 39 months. Loretta and Jim had the youngest baby-4 mo. Edwin came the longest distance. Bobbi was the smartest-she knows the "Pledge of Allegiance at 3 years old-A REAL DOLL !!!We really had a good time and are looking forward to next year.
Thanks again, Ruth and Sherald(Research):My maternal grandmother, Gladys Virginia Delaney, was born 31 March 1908 near Wileyville, in Wetzel County WV. She was the youngest of three daughters born to Wesley Delaney and his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Jackson. They lived on a farm near the mouth of Honey Run. The house is no longer standing (1998), but for many years it was visible from Rt. 7 between Wileyville and Hundred. A small cemetery is located near where the house stood.
I used to love to hear stories that Grandma told me about life when she was a child. One of the stories that she told me happened when she was about 14 years old. She was very ill and had to be taken over Barker Hill, which was then a "corduroy road", meaning that logs were laid together to form a surface that was like the wale of corduroy fabric. She was taken by a horse drawn wagon to Pine Grove, where the train depot was located. From there the train traveled the Short Line to New Martinsville, where she had surgery for acute appendicitis.
Another story she told be that was very vivid to me, was when her cousin, Jimmy Moore, was struck by lightening. A family member put a feather tick mattress over their back to go out into the storm to bring his body back in the house. This Jimmy Moore that was killed by lightening was the one who drove the wagon to Pine Grove when Grandma had appendicitis.Wesley Delaney, b 5 Jan 1854-d 25 Aug 1924, was first married to Jennie Criswell. She was born about 1860 and died 30 Oct 1888, leaving four young children--
Catherine Delaney, born 1878;
Grace Margaret Delaney, born 1881;
Arthur Joy, born 1883
Earl M., born 1884
In 1896, Wesley married Mary Elizabeth Jackson, and they were the parents of
three daughters, Zetta, born 1898; Beulah, born 1905; and Gladys, born 1908.
Wesley Delaney(r)s ancestors on the Delaney-Dulany-Dulaney line had come to
Wetzel County about 1836 from the area of Laurel Cavern in western Pennsylvania in Fayette County, according to census records.To trace back from Wesley Delaney ʿs paternal line -

Thomas Delaney born about 1662 in Queens County Ireland,
1739 in Baltimore County MDAccording to a book written by Roland Dulany Furlong, the spelling of the name was Delaney in Ireland, but after coming to America, some of the older sons of Thomas, by a first wife, changed the spelling to Dulaney or Dulany. This started the changes in spelling that persist to this day. The spelling has changed from father to son, and brothers are buried side by side, with one grave marker having the spelling "Delaney" and the other having "Dulaney". Even in Ireland there were many variations of spelling.
Thomas Delaney, the immigrant, born about 1662 in Queen(r)s County Ireland
changed from the Irish spelling of "Delaney" to the Americanized "Dulany" after coming to America to conform to the spelling that his older sons had taken when they came to the American Colonies in 1703. These older sons arrived at Port Tobacco MD in April 1703 as indentured servants, but became prominent in areas of law, teaching, and medicine. Joseph served an apprenticeship in a doctor(r)s office in Port Tobacco MD. and later settled in Virginia in Fauquier County. William, the second oldest son of Thomas, became a school teacher and lived in Queen Anne(r)s County Maryland .
When they were married 13 Sept 1924, her name is spelled Dulaney at the court house, and she gives age as 17, he gave his age as 22. [he was 19 and she was 16]
They married 7 Feb 1935 in Wetzel co. He gave his age as 21, and she gave her age as 25. [he was 20 and she was 27]
(Research):They moved from Wileyville to Steubenville, OH 2 July 1936, and then moved to Colliers, WV 17 Feb 1943. He went to work at Weirton Steel 26 Feb 1943.
