Established in 1875 by the Fourth Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Wyoming. The county was created out of the northern third of Laramie and Albany Counties, and embraced the territory in the area of the present day counties of Crook, Campbell, and Weston. It was also the sixth county to be organized in Wyoming.
In 1874, a yellow nugget was discovered near Custer, South Dakota, and there was no way to keep the white men from stampeding into the forbidden hills. On the heels of the discovery, the government who was also curious, sent Generals Crook, Custer, and Gibbon with their Bluecoats into the area to find out just how much gold there was. Crook County was named after General Crook.
