Established in 1875 by the Fourth Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Wyoming. The county was created out of the northern third of Laramie and Albany Counties, andembraced the territory in the area of the present day counties of Crook, Campbell, and Weston. It was also the sixth county to be organized in Wyoming.
In 1874, a yellow nugget was discovered nearCuster, South Dakota, and there was no way to keep the white menfrom stampeding into the forbidden hills. On the heels of thediscovery, the government who was also curious, sent GeneralsCrook, Custer, and Gibbon with their Bluecoats into the area tofind out just how much gold there was. Crook County was namedafter General Crook.
