Try various spellings. Census takers often spelled what they heard, not necessarily how it should be spelled. Also, transcription errors can occur because the handwriting is hard to read, or the writing is smudged, any number of reasons.
I strongly suggest that once you find something that looks reasonable that you also look at the associated image. If your familiar with the family you may get a better reading of the image than I could. Also, there's much more information given than what's transcribed.
In a few places you will see [Lined Out]. This means that for some reason that line of the census was lined out by a recorder or checker. Often it will be a duplicate of someone from another place. Possibly because the census taker strayed across boundaries and counted someone that another census taker had already done. |
