* Carter County, one of Wyoming's five original counties, was renamed Sweetwater County in 1869. Its first county seat was South Pass City.

** According to the Wyoming Almanac, Hanover County existed for seven days in 1911 before it was renamed Washakie County.

*** Pease County, formed in 1875, was renamed Johnson County in 1879.
