Helpful Hints!

The Society expects that applicants will present documented papers, proving the line-carrier in each generation. We also expect full documentation for spouses as they are an important part of each generation.

There are several types of documentation.

· Applying with a line of a previously approved lineage
· Primary Evidence...first choice of proof
· Secondary Evidence...available for use if Primary Evidence is missing.
· Circumstantial Evidence...may help find names and connections but proof is missing

Primary Sources

· Vital Records of Birth, Marriage and Death
· Bible and Church Records
· Marriage Bonds or Licenses
· Cemetery Records and Mortality Schedules
· Some Federal Census Records
· Probate Records
· Land Records: Deeds or Property Distributions
· Guardianship and Orphans Records
· Contemporary Family Letters, Diaries, Doctors’ Day Books
· Tax Lists
· Pension and Military Records
· Gravestones and Morticians Records

Secondary Sources

· County or Community histories and “Mug books”
· Family Genealogies (formally published)
· Federal/state census records (showing family relationship)
· Newspaper obituaries, death notices, wedding and anniversary accounts
· Photographs of gravestone inscriptions
· Affidavits and sworn statements
· Contemporary family letters and records
· Circumstantial Evidence (Federal/state census records which do not show family relationship)
· Family Bible records that do not show family relationships

Internet Sources

· Scans or original pages of census records, scans of the original pages of a published book. The original source should be obtained and submitted as documentation.

Sending the application the state Historian
When typing the names of your line be sure you use full names, if known. A middle initial is used only if you do not know what it stands for. If you prefer to be known/addressed by a nickname write your name as: MARGARET/PEGGY or if you are known by another name (and use it often) you can use aka ALBERT. Omit titles such as Lt., Dr., Jr., Sr., III, etc.
I will complete the application for you and return it for you to sign. If you see changes that need to be made, note it on a separate piece of paper. The documentation of certified records should be clear copies. Do not send original records. I will need two sets of your documentation. One will be sent with your application to Plymouth. The other will stay with me in case the application is lost (heaven forbid!) Upon acceptance, your second set will be returned to you. The original set will remain in Plymouth in the General Society files. Do not highlight the documents or underline or write on them. (A post-it arrow will work to mark the place for me).

I hope this will help you. I am excited about your interest and would be happy to help guide you on your way. Do not hesitate to call, email, or mail me if you need assistance.
Welcome aboard!
