The Genealogical Society of South Africa national awards programme was established to recognize excellence, scholarship, and achievement in the field of genealogy, by presenting awards to individuals for significant contributions in advancing, promoting or furthering the science of
genealogy within the borders of South Africa.
Nominees need not be members of the GSSA.
Genealogist of the Year

Associate of the GSSA
-
Martin Ernst Gerhard Zöllner
Martin’s nine years as President of the Genealogical Society of South
Africa was characterised by the evolution that took place within the
Society to allow it to play a leading role in the changing genealogical
environment in South Africa. Through his vision, leadership and new
initiatives, he led the Society from a paper-based era into the
electronic-era and thereby ensuring that the Society could assume a
leadership position in this new environment.
A website was established, and recently the virtual branch of the
Society (eGSSA) was created to satisfy an urgent need of researchers.
Under his leadership the Society was a founding member of the
Genealogical Institute of South Africa (GISA), and the association with
the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) was extended to ensure
cooperation on joint projects.
